Sony HDR-CX520V

With a six-month lag behind their hard-drive-based siblings, the HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR520V, the HDR-CX500V and CX520V promised some much-needed interface enhancements over their solid-but-flawed brothers. While I don't think the interface and control...

Compact design; first-rate video quality and performance; geotagging videos is fun, if limited

No SD card support; awkward control layout; no wind filter; no manual shutter speed, iris, or audio controls; expensive

The geotagging capability remains mostly a novelty, but the top-notch video quality of the Sony Handycam HDR-CX500V and HDR-CX520V make them worthy options. Because internal memory is overpriced, the HDR-XR500V is the better deal of the two, though you...

Sony HDR-CX520V

It was hard walking the aisles at CES without tripping over mounds of flash memory camcorders like the Flip. Harder to find were higher-quality “real” camcorders with zoom lenses and much better high-definition (HD) performance. Oh, they were there all...

Compact, lightweight ; Full AVCHD video ; 64GB onboard memory ; 12x optical zoom ; Excellent OIS system and sound

Expensive ; Flash stills fine, poor unless enough light ; LCD should be better ; No electronic viewfinder

Sony’s flash-based HDR-CX520V produces respectable video with cool frills like GPS geotagging, if you can swallow the price tag.

Good range of features including manual controls ; Good video quality ; Solid build

Geotagging feature didn't work ; Confusing touchscreen menu system ; Odd manual dial location

Review: Sony Handycam HDR-CX520V HD camcorder

China has ordered Google to suspend its foreign Web site search service after warning that the company's filtering of pornography was too weak.

As you’d expect with Sony camcorders, the HDR-CX520V’s build quality is high and it sits comfortably in your hand, giving easy access to its wide zoom toggle and still photo buttons. You’ll find the usual smattering of sockets dotted around the...

This camera is an upgrade from my Sony CX7

This is really an upgrade for me on my previous camcorder the CX7. Great Shake sensor, this is really important coz when you are campturing a HD footage it makes you dizzy when your moving alot. Low light conditions improved compared with CX7.

Excellent shake sensor for walking during use, cant do that on CX7. The low light is good less grain in low light conditions but still there but again its better than CX7.. Amazing HD quality video, still cant see the diffrence with CX7. Great Cam

Still have little grain on video in low light. Gets hot in long use not like my CX7 cant feel anything

Overall excellent camcorder. Researched for a long time before deciding on Sony HDR CX500V. Main reason was low light. most of our shooting is indoor of kids. Took some video in tv room with only overhead lights on and looked brighter on TV than in...
