Sony Handycam HDR-SR7 review: Sony Handycam HDR-SR7

Sony Handycam HDR-SR7

Excellent video and performance; satisfying photo quality; a decent set of manual controls for the target audience; bundled dock.

No wind filter; no USB port on camcorder, just on bundled dock; annoying touch screen interface; cables not ubiquitous yet for mini-HDMI connector.

The hard-drive-based analog of the HDR-HC7, the Sony Handycam HDR-SR7 finally delivers a cutting-edge HD video experience, complete with great video and compatibility frustrations.

Sony Handycam HDR-SR7 Hard Drive Recorder

This Handycam felt rock solid and provided the best optical image stabilization. Its stop/start button is in the perfect place, but the zoom control is positioned right where your middle finger rests—bad idea. We like the “easy” mode, which, with the...

Rock-solid; good optical image stabilization; "easy" mode; great video quality

Awkwardly placed zoom button; stop button delay. Very slight artifacting

Getting past that, the camcorder’s performance with our video test shots was strong, with brightly lit situations displaying lifelike color and tack-sharp resolution. It did well with low and medium room light, too, and showed us the best contrast...

As a standalone product, the HDR-SR7E is nearly impossible to fault. However, most users would be better off getting the HDR-SR8E, which offers a much larger hard drive for a slightly higher premium.

Vibrant picture quality, excellent stills mode, user-friendly touch interface

It's practically the same price as the superior HDR-SR8E

Sony Handycam HDR-SR7 review

Sharing a perch at the top of Sony's HD prosumer camcorder line, the Handycam HDR-SR7 manages to combine a raft of cutting-edge capabilities without forgetting that its primary function is capturing high-quality HD video. This facility still doesn't...

Sony Handycam HDR-SR7

If you've got the prerequisite high-def hardware in your lounge room and are in the market for a camcorder, this is the one to get.

Plenty of output and input options ; Easy to hold steady ; Sharp and vivid video

but you'll need an HD TV and Blu-ray/PS3 to truly get the best ; Manual settings require diving through touchscreen menus ; Mini-HDMI cable not included -- screams of penny pinching

Compared to the tape and mini-DVD based high-def camcorders Sony launched earlier this year, there are only a few minor detail improvements. But we feel that the addition of a high capacity hard-disk to the existing combination of high-def recording,...
