Sony Handycam HDR-XR100

Though it's not the least expensive model in Sony's AVCHD camcorder lineup--the Handycam HDR-CX100 fills that spot--the hard-drive-based HDR-XR100 looks, feels, and performs as if it should be. Boxy looking, in a boring two-tone silver and black...

Relatively fast start-up; comfortable design

So-so video quality for HD; annoying touch screen and interface

While it's a perfectly serviceable HD camcorder, the Sony Handycam HDR-XR100 should deliver a little more of everything for the money.

Sony HDR-XR100 Handycam

Sony's entry-level HD video camera makes good in its promise of high definition footage but lacked some key features I thought should have been included. Let me share some of the footage and shots I got with the Sony HDR-XR100 Handycam.

Sony Handycam HDR-XR100 review

While it's a perfectly serviceable hi-def camcorder, the Sony Handycam HDR-XR100 should deliver rather more of everything for the money

Relatively fast to start up ; Comfortable design

Average hi-def video quality ; Annoying touchscreen and interface

On the upside, the XR100 doesn't have the CX100's lens flare problems, but it does frequently display fringing on high-contrast edges. The 4-megapixel interpolated stills look somewhat over-processed, as you'd expect, and the native-resolution shots...

If you're looking to spend about AU$1500 on an HD camcorder, there are a few decent alternatives, like the Panasonic HDC-HS20 or JVC GZ-HD320, you might want to consider before shelling out for the just alright Sony Handycam HDR-XR100. If you can...

"Incompatible with everything"

After making the mistake of buying a Sony without sufficient research (the Best Buy I was at did not have the Canon I was looking for), I was horrified to learn that most of the functionality of the Sony Handycam required me to buy a Windows-based PC...

If you are an employee or major sharheholder of Sony, this is for you. Everyone else, avoid the brand.

Sony products can not be used with Macs (without major workarounds), and the literature and instructions for use are deliberatly misleading in this regard. Moreover, the default HD files can not be burned to use with a DVD player - only a Blu-Ray.

"Wow! Great replay on 1080p screen."

Cool, but almost wish i'd gotten the 200 series for the extra features.

Nice auto-date feature for recordings. This camera is light-weight, shooting doesn't get tiring.

Zoom lacking a bit. I also wish it had view finder at times. No nite-shot is also a bummer, still have it on my digi8 camcorder and like it. package doesn't include hd cable :-(

I've seen better camcorders

I think that the XR-100 image quality looks like the CX-100 that I looked at earlier. They have the same specs but the XR-100 has a HDD (80GB).My findings were that the colours just didn't seem 100% as they had inaccurate tints to them when I saw this...

Not impressed

I had a look at one in a store and I wasn't impressed. I was in the market for a HD camcorder and did my own comparisons in store. The picture quality from HDR-CX100 looked similar to the HDR-XR100, both having a pale look with their image. In my...
