Mini review video: Our quick verdict on the Alcatel Idol 4S

The Alcatel Idol 4S' biggest selling point is not what came in the box, but the box itself, which doubles as a VR headset. The $350 (pre-order price) device comes with its own VR viewer so you can immediately start exploring immersive content when you...

Included VR goggles ; Affordable ; Loud, two-way speakers ; Bright, roomy display

Not as fast as competing phones ; Camera struggles in low light

Alcatel Idol 4S

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a unique unlocked Android phone that comes with a VR headset and plenty of other accessories, offering good value for the price.

Relatively affordable. Attractive build. Gorgeous Quad HD display. Solid audio. Dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC. Latest Android software. Plentiful accessories.

Mediocre camera performance. Processor sometimes stutters while gaming. Heavy custom UI layer and some bloatware.

Conclusions The Alcatel Idol 4S is a sleek Android phone with a beautiful display and lots of useful accessories for the price. At $400, it's a relatively affordable way to get into VR, especially compared with buying a Gear VR and a pricey Samsung...

Alcatel Idol 4S review: it's hard out there for a phone

If you've thought of Alcatel at all, you've probably only thought of it as a budget smartphone maker, creating drops in a sea of low-end Android phones. But say you're Alcatel, how do you move up...

Great screen ; Fast performance ; Loud speakers

Design could use refinement ; Camera lacks stabilization ; VR experience is limited

Alcatel Idol 4S review

Alcatel's Idol 4S may come with a VR headset, but it's still not a good deal.

The Idol 4S has an excellent display, a near-stock Android experience, comes with a VR headset, and offers decent battery life. Unfortunately, it also has an unimpressive camera, odd button placements, and the VR content that is pre-loaded on the phone...

Alcatel Idol 4S Review

The smartphone market is all too often one of extremes. It's easy to throw down $700 on a new phone and expect screaming performance, innovative new features, and an attractive design incorporating plenty of premium-feeling materials. It's also easy to...

Fantastic stereo speakers ; Bundled VR headset and JBL earbuds are nice additions ; Solid battery life and fast recharge times ; Snapdragon 652 processor doesn't let us down

Better phones available for the same price ; Boom key tries to do way too much ; Hit-and-miss fingerprint scanner ; Camera adequate at best

The plastic VR viewer is sturdy, has nice optics, and as we'd only expect from a custom model like this, fits the Idol 4S really well. But it's also little more than a fancy (and not even that fancy) Google Cardboard headset, lacking the extra...

Alcatel Idol 4S review: Getting the most from the mid-range

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a 5.5-inch mid-range phone from a company that's spent the time to refine its design and hardware. You get access to a fantastic camera with manual features and Hi-Fi audio. The phone delivers an excellent display, no matter...

Awesome camera with plenty of features ; Fantastic battery life ; Great Hi-Fi audio

Phone can feel slippery in your hand ; Processor heats up after extended use

Alcatel Idol 4S with VR

Alcatel impressed us with last year's Idol 3, it proved that a relatively inexpensive phone could still be stylish and slim with decent specs. The $399 Idol 4S with VR Goggles is the company's highest end phone yet, and it does indeed share some specs...

Great looks and build quality. Bright high res AMOLED 5.5" display, good performance, works on AT&T and T-Mobile with LTE 4G

Price may be too high for this still relatively small-name player, VR quality with bundled goggles isn't very good

There's a lot to like about the Alcatel Idol 4S: it's really slim and great looking, performance is quite good, the cameras are decent and it has all trimmings of a more expensive phone like a big AMOLED 2K screen, NFC, a fingerprint scanner and dual...

Alcatel Idol 4s review

Can Alcatel continue what it started last year with their latest affordable smartphone offering? We find out, in this our Alcatel Idol 4s review!

Immersive Quad HD display ; Great design ; Good performance ; Dual-SIM & unlocked ; Full LTE bands support ; Camera can produce great shots ; Above-average battery life ; Comes in an awesome bundle ; Great price point for the bundle ; Excellent...

SoC is slower than rival similar-priced flagships ; Camera is hit and miss ; Design lacks a little bit of refinement

The Idol 4S undoubtedly delivers several welcome improvements over the cheaper Idol 3 and a worthy successor it is, but in an increasingly-competitive industry, the Idol 4S may not be the best smartphone you can buy for $399.

Review: Alcatel Idol 4S - Unlocked

Alcatel's flagship Android handset strives to break through barriers with its high-end design and mid-range specs. The middle of the market is a tough space in which to play, and, rather than allowing the Idol 4S to stand on its own merits, Alcatel...

When I met with Alcatel to pick up my Idol 4S review unit, much of the discussion revolved around value. I'm not quite sure Alcatel's math adds up.

Alcatel Idol 4S Review

Known for making value smartphones, Alcatel has been relatively quiet in the U.S., but the company still has a strong market share worldwide. That first part could be changing — their latest handset is the Idol 4S, and it's poised to compete in the...
