iPhone 4 Review

This iPhone 4 review goes in-depth and leaves all the politics and fanboism behind to focus on the actual user experience of using an iPhone. Is the iPhone 4 for you or not?

The iPhone 4 is an excellent smartphone, the best one in fact. This is quite a step up from the iPhone 3GS, thanks to the display and the many improvements in the OS. If you don’t have an iPhone but want to get one, I would recommend the iPhone 4 over...

iPhone 4 Review

We try to keep our Apple coverage to a minimum, as we know that it's not the favorite company of most of our readers. That's why you generally won't see a review of a new MacBook or iMac on this site even though these machines are, for all intents and...

Unparalleled screen quality; high quality camera; (sort of) multitasking

Needs a case to function properly; can only run approved apps; stuck with AT&T

Apple’s oppressive app store policies are as much of an issue as ever (though the phone is already easy to jailbreak), as is the fact that the phone is tied to AT&T’s spotty coverage and stingy data plans. We’re not going to dwell on these issues here...

Apple iPhone 4 (8GB - white, Virgin Mobile)

When the first iPhone debuted in 2007, it and subsequent versions were only available on AT&T. Finally, in 2011, it landed on Verizon Wireless, with Sprint getting the iPhone 4 and 4S a year later.

The Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 offers all the usual iPhone features, plus mobile hot spot, without a contract.

Virgin's iPhone 4 data speeds are slower than AT&T's and Verizon's, and it lacks both world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously.

At a hefty cost, the Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 delivers an unlimited plan without a contract -- just don't expect blazing-fast data speeds.

Apple iPhone 4 (Virgin Mobile)

Apple's iPhone 4 is still a good smartphone, but it costs too much compared with Virgin's Android-powered competitors.

The least expensive iPhone available (with service, over two years). Excellent high-res screen. Terrific apps

Expensive. No 4G. Won't get all the features from the new iOS

The Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 is the least expensive iPhone model available, if you factor in the cost of the service plan. But while it's a good phone, like its sibling the 4S on Virgin, it's just much too expensive than other good phones on the market....

Verizon iPhone 4: Thoroughly Reviewed

After literally years of fruitless rumor, speculation, and waiting, the Verizon iPhone is finally here. It's a CDMA version with almost identical hardware to the GSM/UMTS version which shipped in the summer, with a few small changes and surprises.

Apple iPhone 4 (8GB, black, Verizon Wireless)

Editors' note: We updated this review on March 10, 2011 with additional testing results. On October 4, 2010, Apple added an 8GB version of the iPhone 4.

The Verizon iPhone 4 offers a hot-spot feature not available on AT&T's device. Performance was better in most regards

The Verizon iPhone 4 lacks world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously. The hot-spot feature didn't work with all devices

The Verizon iPhone 4 has much in common with its AT&T counterpart, but varying features and different performance give it enough room to stand apart. It won't vastly change your iPhone experience, but we welcome the consumer choice that it brings.

Verizon iPhone review

The Verizon iPhone 4 is an interesting product for Engadget to review. Firstly, it's not exactly a new device (not in any outwardly noticeable way).

Far fewer dropped calls than AT&T version ; No Verizon crapware ; It's the iPhone 4

Data rates slower than AT&T model ; Hotspot interrupted by incoming calls ; Poor overseas roaming options

Apple iPhone 4 review: Love it or hate it

You can't make a phone that everyone loves and Apple is not even trying. Much like any other iPhone so far, the iPhone 4 is a phone that everybody loves AND hates. Apple's latest is always the greatest – you have to give them that...

Quad-band GSM and quad-band 3G support with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA ; 3.5" 16M-color LED-backlit TFT capacitive touchscreen of 640 x 960 px resolution ; Scratch-resistant glass front and rear, with fingerprint-resistant coating ; 1GHz Apple...

Hardware design is prone to reception issues ; MicroSIM card support only ; No Flash support in the web browser ; No true multitasking for all applications ; FaceTime video calls work only over Wi-Fi ; No file transfer over Bluetooth or USB Mass...

Apple’s latest is always the greatest – you have to give them that. Sometimes it seems they put less effort into making it than in letting people know they did. But with the Apple iPhone 4, they were obviously hard at work. The 4th generation iPhone...

iPhone 4 Review

Block-circling queues, midnight campers and stores with all the stock wrung out of them: it can only be a new iPhone. Apple's iPhone 4 has landed and it's taking no prisoners. Packing the freshly-released iOS4 with a slimmed-down, powered-up hardware,...

Out of the box, though, the iPhone 4 is one of the most polished, appealing smartphones on the market today. By boosting the camera, upgrading the screen and generally tightening up the whole user experience, Apple has neatly answered most of the...

FaceTime video chatting ; High resolution Retina 960 x 640 pixel 3.5-inch display ; 5-megapixel camera with LED flash; HD video recorder ; 16GB or 32 GB built-in memory ; Long battery life

Sharp edges ; Less memory than 3G S; no 64GB version ; Greenish screen tone ; No HDMI out ; Orange hue on indoor photos ; No external camera shutter button

The iPhone 4 delivers a super-sharp screen and clever videoconferencing abilities, but existing iPhone owners shouldn’t be in a hurry to upgrade.

Product Specifications

Apple's iPhone is a great piece of hardware, and arguably one of the best smartphones on the market today. It has access to the largest mobile application store, with over 250,000 applications. It plays thousands of fun games, runs many great productivity apps, and has a variety of different built-in functions. It also has a full web browser, so you can get any online content from any website on the iPhone. It uses AT&T's mobile 3G network where available. AT&T has the fastest 3G mobile network, although the iPhone does have some slight reception problems, especially in weak signal areas. The iPhone 4 has a beautiful screen, with Apples' retina display, and the large touch-screen makes it easy to type on the iPhone. Front and back cameras enable mobile photography, as well as video conferencing with Apple's FaceTime.
