BlackBerry Priv review: Android alone can't save the company

For physical keyboard devotees, there's not much choice in the smartphone world right now, but BlackBerry does a decent job with the Priv. The high price will deter fair-weather buyers, but if you can't stand typing on glass, this is your only option.

Mixes the best of BlackBerry and Android ; Good-looking device, comfortable to hold ; Decent camera

Keyboard isn't great ; High price ; Ships with Android Lollipop

BlackBerry is probably done as a phone manufacturer, and John Chen has pledged to shut down the division if it doesn't turn a profit by 2016. That's not going to be possible, not through any fault of BlackBerry, but because almost no Android...

Blackberry Priv Review

The BlackBerry Priv combines Google's Android operating system with BlackBerry's security features and a slider form factor with hardware qwerty-keyboard. In the camera module an 18MP sensor works together with a Schneider Kreuznach designed lens and...

BlackBerry Priv review: can an Android phone save BlackBerry?

This is the phone that's supposed to save BlackBerry. That seems like a dire thing to say about the new Android-powered BlackBerry Priv, which in any other context would just be yet-another...

Physical keyboard ; Clever software optimizations ; Improved camera

Software bugs ; Slow camera ; Expensive for an Android phone

BlackBerry Priv (Unlocked)

The unlocked Priv brings BlackBerry's basic strengths—a physical keyboard and notifications—to Android in a big, heavy, pricey package, making it a niche buy.

Physical QWERTY keyboard. Beautiful screen. Good notifications. Excellent voice quality and battery life.

Expensive. Heavy. Camera focus issues. Super-thick Android skin.

Comparisons and Conclusions I've been reviewing BlackBerrys for more than 11 years now , and it's funny how the company's heritage comes through on the Priv. It's a terrific voice phone, with great battery life and a solid keyboard. It's also really...

Review: BlackBerry Priv

You still see them from time to time—the people who carry two phones: An Android or iPhone for the fun stuff, and a BlackBerry for work. While BlackBerry's global market share may have dropped from more than 20 percent in 2009 to just half a percent...

All the messaging strengths of a BlackBerry with all the apps of an Android phone. The software keyboard is excellent, and the physical keyboard feels great for smaller hands. Using the keyboard as a touchpad while viewing the full screen is useful....

In touchscreen mode, there's give to the screen due to the slider design. Using the physical keyboard as a touchpad doesn't always work the way you'd want it to. Setting security notifications in DTEK involves going through a list of apps, one by one....

Ultimately, how you feel about the BlackBerry Priv likely has a lot to do with your last phone. If you’re a longtime BlackBerry user who’s looking for something that finally—finally—gives you a hardware keyboard with a legitimate app ecosystem and some...

The BlackBerry Priv gambles on Android and a physical keyboard (review)

The BlackBerry Priv is a strong effort that should win back BlackBerry fans, but you need to really want a physical keyboard.

The BlackBerry Priv delivers strong performance in a sleek, solid package. The subtle tweaks to Android are useful, and the compact keyboard packs in useful functionality. It's also fun to slide open, over and over again.

The keyboard is a bit narrow for large hands, and the device feels top heavy when fully extended. This security-focused phone is missing a few modern protection options, like a fingerprint reader or iris scanner.

Android and an awesome keyboard make the Priv the best BlackBerry in years, but if you're not a keyboard lover and aren't much of a security seeker, you'll find phones that are cheaper, or offer better features than the Priv.

BlackBerry Priv review: If you simply must have a physical keyboard

BlackBerry's first stab at an Android phone is a pretty decent attempt. But will it be enough to save the company?

Consistent, capable 18-megapixel camera ; Long lasting battery life that can make it through a whole day

Phone construction is a little flimsy ; Physical keyboard requires a bit of a learning curve

I was impressed with the Priv’s 18-megapixel rear-facing camera. I thought surely that BlackBerry would have flubbed the camera part of its Android smartphone, but it actually equipped it with some very capable hardware.

BlackBerry Priv Smartphone Review

Hot handset. Opposing the trend of touch control, Blackberry still incorporates a physical keyboard with slider mechanism in its Priv top model. Our report reveals whether this balancing act between classic and modernity is successful, and what...

physical keyboard with slider mechanism ; rigid, non-slip casing ; latest Android Marshmallow ; practical software adaptations ; USB OTG, NFC, Slimport & Miracast ; micro-SD card can be used as internal storage ; fast WiFi ac ; very good phone...

no fingerprint scanner ; poor front-facing camera ; non-removable battery ; high temperature development & throttling in some cases ; below-average performance for the premium range ; hollow sound when tapping front and back ; USB 2.0 only

The BlackBerry Priv has not been a major success for the company despite the solid hardware: The accurate touchscreen, the non-slip casing material, and the high-resolution screen please in everyday use. The various software modification and decent...

You get all the Android and the BB strengths in one nice package. If that sounds like a great proposition, you may just fall in love with it.
