Samsung Jet

Samsung Jet Icon mobile phone

By Ross Catanzariti

Packing in a wealth of features including a brilliant AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi, its strange to think the Samsung Jet Icon isn't actually a smartphone. Though it lacks the ability to install third-party applications, the intuitive ...

Compact design, AMOLED display, TouchWIZ user interface, 5-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, smart unlock

No access to third party apps, messaging speeds are a little slow, resistive touch screen rather than capacitive

The Samsung Jet Icon is a capable multimedia phone - a 3.5mm headphone jack, video recording, DivX playback and Bluetooth with A2DP are all included. It also has an FM radio and a handy music recognition application, similar to the iPhone app Shazam, ...

LG GD900 Crystal

LG Crystal (GD900) mobile phone

By Ross Catanzariti

As its name suggests, LG's Crystal (GD900) is a fashion-oriented mobile phone. Featuring a unique, transparent "crystal" keypad, the LG Crystal tries hard to break from the stigma commonly associated with fashion phones - that they ultimately lack ...

Transparent keypad that doubles as a gesture touchpad, Wi-Fi, responsive touch screen

No GPS, no 3.5mm headphone jack, all plastic build, poor camera performance, sluggish user interface

The included browser is usable, but suffers the same issues as both the Arena and the Viewty Smart - it's difficult to select links, touches are often a hit and miss affair and it's difficult to position the cursor when trying to select text

Palm Pixi

Palm Pixi smartphone

By Ginny Mies

Thankfully, most of the great features of webOS have not been compromised. After spending some time with the Palm Pixi, we found a lot to like about this sprightly smartphone - for the most part.

Palm Pixi is very light, batteries can be swapped with the Palm Pre, great features of webOS still onboard, 2.63in display is ideal for typing long emails and text messages

Only fair battery performance, keyboard and keys difficult to use for a phone that's marketed toward heavy messagers

The Palm Pixi is a small, sprightly webOS-based smartphone with a lot of potential.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic smartphone

By Ross Catanzariti

A smaller, cheaper version of the first Nokia touch-screen mobile phone, the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia's 5530 XpressMusic lacks 3G connectivity and GPS. A more compact design and a competitive price tag are the main differences with its bigger brother.

Responsive touch screen, compact design, 3.5mm headphone jack, contacts bar, home screen shortcuts, zippy UI

No 3G, no GPS, questionable build quality, touch input isn't consistent, text input is hit and miss

A smaller, more compact version of the 5800, Nokia's 5530 XpressMusic is a very similar handset to its bigger brother, though it lacks GPS and 3G connectivity. While we prefer the smaller design, build quality is again questionable.

Nokia N86

Nokia N86 8MP smartphone

By Ross Catanzariti

In a day and age where feature-packed, touch-screen smartphones dominate the upper tier of the mobile phone world, you can't help but feel Nokia's N86 8MP looks a little out of place. Though it offers a reliable interface, a decent features list and ...

Reasonable build quality, decent camera, Ovi Store preloaded, zippy Symbian interface, AMOLED display

Expensive, nothing overly new or exciting, some keys are a little small

The Nokia N86 8MP is a premium multimedia phone with a price tag close to those of the best touch-screen smartphones on the market. It€™s not a bad phone at all, but there really isn€™t anything to get excited about.

Nokia E52

Nokia E52 smartphone

By Ross Catanzariti

Nokia's E Series devices are predominantly targeted at business users, but the E52's subtle design will appeal to regular consumers as well. It doesn€™t have a full QWERTY keyboard, but the Nokia E52 boasts outstanding battery life, a razor-thin ...

Fantastic battery life, slim and stylish design, great numeric keypad, Nokia Messaging

Controls are a mixed bag, lack of QWERTY keyboard will deter many

Nokia's E52 is a strange device when you consider it's an e-mail smartphone that lacks a QWERTY keyboard. If you aren't fussed by the (admittedly excellent) numeric keypad, the E52 offers fantastic battery life in a slim and compact design.

Sony Ericsson C903

Sony Ericsson C903 mobile phone

By Ross Catanzariti

Looking almost identical to a standalone digital camera from the back, the C903 is Sony Ericsson's latest Cyber-shot mobile phone. This camera phone takes reasonable photos, but its build quality is questionable and there really is little else to get ...

Excellent 5-megapixel camera with lens cover, built-in GPS, zippy UI, impressive display

Questionable build quality, annoying controls, no Wi-Fi, no 3.5mm headphone jack

Sony Ericsson's C903 Cyber-shot mobile phone will suit those looking for a basic phone with a good camera, but there is little else about this handset that will get you excited.

Nokia 6303 classic

Nokia 6700 classic mobile phone

By Ross Catanzariti

A mid-range mobile phone (otherwise known as a "dumbphone"), Nokia's 6700 classic won't appeal to social-networking buffs, business users or those who are interested in the latest and greatest touch-screen smartphones. A basic handset that's well ...

Stainless steel design and build, 5-megapixel camera, built-in GPS, simple UI, access to Ovi Store

No 3.5mm headphone jack, glossy casing is hard to keep clean, stubborn volume control

Nokia's 6700 classic doesn't come with all the bells and whistles of the latest touch screen smartphones, but if you're after a solid mid-range handset that won't break the bank, you may be impressed.

HTC Hero / T-Mobile G2 Touch

HTC Hero smartphone

By Ross Catanzariti

Just the third Google Android mobile phone to be released in Australia, HTC's Hero smartphone takes the platform to new heights. It follows on from the HTC Dream and the HTC Magic with Google. Featuring HTC's Sense user interface, the Hero is without ...

Distinctive design, Teflon-coated casing, Sense UI is excellent, user-friendly and a joy to use, Android platform, fully customisable, polished Web browser, 3.5mm headphone jack, contacts integration with social networking

Interface feels sluggish at various times

The HTC Hero is without doubt one of the most impressive smartphones we've reviewed. The design is distinctive, the user interface is absolutely superb and it's packed with all the latest features. Unfortunately, the Hero doesn't seem to have the ...

HTC Snap S520

HTC Snap smartphone

By Ross Catanzariti

HTC's Snap smartphone sports a thin profile, a stylish matte black finish and an excellent QWERTY keyboard. It doesn't offer anything revolutionary, but it is a good choice if you aren't interested in a touch-screen smartphone.

Fantastic keyboard, thin, matte black finish, Inner Circle feature, HTC Home Screen, fast

Trackball is small and sunken, no 3.5mm headphone jack

HTC's Snap is small, light and functional, and it has one of the best physical keyboards we've seen on a smartphone. The Snap doesn't offer anything revolutionary but what it does, it does very well.
