HTC Desire 816 review: A mid-range M8 let down by sluggish cameras

HTC may have some problems behind closed doors, but outside, it's still widely regarded as one of the world's top phone makers. We already gave this

Nice big screen ; Slick Android UI ; Loud front-facing speakers ; Attractive design

Cameras can be sluggish ; Poor HDR images ; Not as good a value as certain other devices, namely the OnePlus One

HTC's Desire 816 is almost a perfect mid-range LTE phablet with good looks, a nice display and slick general performance, only to be let down by its erratically sluggish cameras.

HTC Desire 816 ( grey)

Meant to be a best-in-class midrange phone, HTC's Desire 816 lacks the fancy aluminum body of its more expensive sibling, the One M8 . But this plastic-clad beauty keeps most of the style and a good share of the features too. Like the One Mini , it...

The HTC Desire 816's plastic body is well built. The brilliant 5.5-inch HD display has excellent viewing angles, and the quad-core processor runs smoothly, with hardly any lag.

The glossy plastic rear is a fingerprint magnet, which is especially noticeable on the darker models. The lack of a removable battery is disappointing, given its relatively small capacity.

The HTC Desire 816's combination of solid design and quality performance strikes all the right chords to make it a compelling phone for its price.

HTC Desire 816 Review

Meet the HTC Desire 816. Described by its maker as a “flagship mid-range” phone, it strikes a great balance between price and features with its generous 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor, and 13MP camera. At the same time, goodies borrowed straight...

Very large display ; Snappy UI performance ; Stylish Sense 6.0 interface ; Front-facing stereo speakers ; Camera takes good photos ; Good value for money ; Above average battery life

Heavy video games may be choppy ; A bit large given the screen size ; Earpiece quality could have been better ; Only 4.2GB of user-available built-in storage makes using a microSD card mandatory

Well, what do you know: the HTC Desire 816 is an admirable mid-range smartphone, especially knowing that it can be bought for under $400 in markets where it is available. We don't find anything wrong with it given its price range, so guys, if you're on...

Desire 816

Plenty of things should turn us off the Desire 816: it's made from plastic; the big screen has a low resolution; the camera is ordinary. But these seemingly mediocre parts add up to deliver an experience that is complete. The Desire 816 has character,...

Fantastic audio Well designed Large screen

Not the best camera

HTC recommends you gloss regularly

Dual front-facing speakers ; Reasonably priced ; MicroSD card support ; Big 5.5-inch screen

Gloss plastic ; Non-removable battery ; Power button placement ; 720p resolution

The HTC Desire 816 is definitely worth buying if you're dead set on a larger screen and you don't want to break the bank. The speakers are excellent, and in the right conditions, the camera is also a leader in this category.

HTC Desire 816 review

Not everyone wants to shell out for a flagship smartphone, but equally the same people don't necessarily need to buy the cheapest smartphone going. HTC is aiming the new Desire 816 squarely at the mid-range buyer, and it looks like it's got the formula...

Like HTC’s Desire 610, the Desire 816 sits awkwardly between other smartphones in terms of price, with rivals including the OnePlus One, Nokia Lumia 1320 and Nexus 5 among others. If you’re won over by the big screen, you won’t be disappointed if you...

Big screen, big speakers and a not too shabby plastic design

Great sounding speakers ; Decent 720p HD screen ; Smooth overall performance

Buttons a stretch to reach ; Camera slow to focus in low-light ; Lacks a standout feature

It's a very responsive screen, too, as it handles screen swipes and actions with no issues at all. Resolution aside, then, it's a very decent screen, particularly considering its size and the relatively cheap price you pay for it.

HTC Desire 816 review: a good phone for a great price

The Desire 816 is one of the best phones we've used in this price range, especially if you're after a 5.5 incher.

We’d like to see more devices like this from HTC. Affordableand usable without any of the bells and whistles. Hopefully the Desire 816 willdo well enough to encourage its maker to continue down the solid mid-range path. This is a phone that deserves to...

What works for the Desire 816 is that despite being lesser endowed, it has inherited some great features from high-end HTC models.
