HTC Desire 816 review: A mid-range M8 let down by sluggish cameras

HTC may have some problems behind closed doors, but outside, it's still widely regarded as one of the world's top phone makers. We already gave this

Nice big screen ; Slick Android UI ; Loud front-facing speakers ; Attractive design

Cameras can be sluggish ; Poor HDR images ; Not as good a value as certain other devices, namely the OnePlus One

HTC's Desire 816 is almost a perfect mid-range LTE phablet with good looks, a nice display and slick general performance, only to be let down by its erratically sluggish cameras.

HTC Desire 816 review: Heart's desire

HTC has mostly stayed out of the phablet market but the segment is expanding so fast the Taiwanese can't afford to keep snubbing it. The HTC Desire 816 is only the company's second phablet and it's the first affordable one. It rides on the premium...

5.5" 720p Super LCD2 capacitive touchscreen, ambient light sensor ; Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1.6GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU, Adreno 305 GPU and 1.5GB of RAM ; Android 4.4.2 KitKat with HTC Sense 6.0 ; 13MP autofocus camera, 1080p video...

Power key is on top, hard to reach on a big phone ; Side buttons are poorly positioned and feel cheap ; Small battery for a phablet ; Underwhelming stereo speaker loudness

The Desire 816 is only HTC's second attempt at a phablet - a bit unusual considering the segment has been expanding rapidly. So why is HTC hesitant to enter it with both feet the way other companies have?

HTC Desire 816 ( grey)

Meant to be a best-in-class midrange phone, HTC's Desire 816 lacks the fancy aluminum body of its more expensive sibling, the One M8 . But this plastic-clad beauty keeps most of the style and a good share of the features too. Like the One Mini , it...

The HTC Desire 816's plastic body is well built. The brilliant 5.5-inch HD display has excellent viewing angles, and the quad-core processor runs smoothly, with hardly any lag.

The glossy plastic rear is a fingerprint magnet, which is especially noticeable on the darker models. The lack of a removable battery is disappointing, given its relatively small capacity.

The HTC Desire 816's combination of solid design and quality performance strikes all the right chords to make it a compelling phone for its price.

HTC Desire 816 Review

Meet the HTC Desire 816. Described by its maker as a “flagship mid-range” phone, it strikes a great balance between price and features with its generous 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor, and 13MP camera. At the same time, goodies borrowed straight...

Very large display ; Snappy UI performance ; Stylish Sense 6.0 interface ; Front-facing stereo speakers ; Camera takes good photos ; Good value for money ; Above average battery life

Heavy video games may be choppy ; A bit large given the screen size ; Earpiece quality could have been better ; Only 4.2GB of user-available built-in storage makes using a microSD card mandatory

Well, what do you know: the HTC Desire 816 is an admirable mid-range smartphone, especially knowing that it can be bought for under $400 in markets where it is available. We don't find anything wrong with it given its price range, so guys, if you're on...

Review: HTC Desire 816

While there's lots of action in the high-rent district of phablet town, HTC is looking to sneak in and grab a slice of the mid-priced pie. But is a device that borrows the best from smartphone and tablet something that should be compromised on? Read...

HTC Desire 816 review

HTC's mid-range flagship packs a gigantic screen into a more affordable handset If HTC is to stage a financial recovery, it'll need more than just a compelling high-end smartphone. So as the company seeks to navigate back into the black for more than a...

Much of the real competition for the 816 comes from year-old flagship phones. The Desire 816 sells for around €360 in Europe, suggesting a UK price point a little under £300. At that level, HTC's most significant competitor might be LG — the Korean...

HTC Desire 816 Review

[Editor's note: Our review unit is from China, and while it has Sense 5.5, it will be updated to Sense 6 'soon'. All Desire 816's purchased outside of China will have Sense 6 out of the box]

So there you have it for the HTC Desire 816. Overall, this is a fantastic phone and although it’s being pushed as a midrange offering I never felt that way about this phone during my time using it. It comes packed with a large and beautiful looking...

Desire 816

Plenty of things should turn us off the Desire 816: it's made from plastic; the big screen has a low resolution; the camera is ordinary. But these seemingly mediocre parts add up to deliver an experience that is complete. The Desire 816 has character,...

HTC Desire 816 review

HTC recommends you gloss regularly

Dual front-facing speakers ; Reasonably priced ; MicroSD card support ; Big 5.5-inch screen

Gloss plastic ; Non-removable battery ; Power button placement ; 720p resolution

The HTC Desire 816 is definitely worth buying if you're dead set on a larger screen and you don't want to break the bank. The speakers are excellent, and in the right conditions, the camera is also a leader in this category.

HTC Desire 816 review

HTC's new mid-range Android smartphone offers big-screen thrills for a bargain price. Find out if its worth your wonga in our HTC Desire 816 review

Solid build quality ; Great speakers ; It's massive

Takes grainy pictures ; Bloatware ; Lacks some features

We like the HTC Desire 816 a lot. If you can sacrifice a few features, are prepared to forego top-end performance, but still want a big screen, it's a real contender for your dosh. It might be worth waiting to try the OnePlus One, but as it stands,...
