Palm Pre

Palm Pre

By Ray Aguilera

We have a confession to make: There are a few Palm fans among us. Backin the day, you would have had to pry the grayscale Palm IIIx out ofour cold, dead, extremely well-organized hands. But Palm lost itsway--and we went back to our paper calendar for ...

Slide-out keyboard. Apps can run in the background. Sleek design

No direct Mac syncing. iTunes sync is a cat-and-mouse game with Apple. Unintuitive UI. Keyboard layout can be confusing. Keys are teeny-tiny. Pre's App Catalog is sparse

Background apps are awesome, and (apparently) some users are still married to a physical keyboard. But for most Mac users, the Palm Pre doesn't stack up, leaving the smartphone score at Apple: 3, iPhone killers: 0.

Apple iPhone 3G

Apple iPhone 3G

By Ray Aguilera

The first iPhone was still hot off the press when rumors of a 3G model began to circulate. Fueled by the prevalence of 3G networks outside the United States-and the comparative pokiness of AT&T's EDGE network-the speculation has finally come to an end.

App store offers tons more functionality. Faster 3G network. GPS

Mediocre battery life. Some apps could have used more testing. Higher data plan rates. No bundled SMS

Small glitches can give the iPhone 3G a 1.0 feel, but its broad capabilities make it a winner for anyone who needs to stay connected to more than just a phone line.

The Sims DJ

The Sims DJ

By Zack Stern

Stereotypical, shallow DJs have more depth than this iPod game. Imagine you're spinning turntables in the hottest nightclub in the city, keeping the party rocking until the fire marshal shuts you down. The role of the fire marshal will be played ...

DJ-and-nightclub simulator is a fun idea. Can use your own songs in the game

Repetitive game mechanics loop every few minutes. Gameplay has little to do with nightclubs. Outfits and iPod songs don't affect game results

Palm Treo 700w

Treo 700p

Feature-Filled PDA and Mobile Phone

High-speed data transfers. Cool multimedia apps. Great design ; Not the most comfortable keyboard for typing. Lacks built-in instant-messaging. Expensive

Not the most comfortable keyboard for typing. Lacks built-in instant-messaging. Expensive

. If you're looking for a Mac-compatible PDA phone that does equal justice to data and chitchat, you can't do better than the 700p. If you already own a 650, it may be hard to justify the purchase price unless the higher speeds and interactive content ...
