Moto Z3 Play hands-on review

A super-thin phone with good battery life? Motorola's Moto Z3 Play might just deliver.

Strong battery life claims ; Speedy performance ; Mostly stock software ; Mods still work ; Super-thin

Big camera bump ; Earpiece is the only speaker ; No headphone jack

Moto Z3 review

Great performance ; Good display ; Day-long battery life ; Capable camera, no shutter lag ; Promise of 5G

Thick camera bump, uninspiring design ; Unavailable to non-Verizon customers ; Poor low-light camera

The Moto Z3 brings strong performance, an all-day battery, and an affordable price tag. The potential of 5G aside, it’s the best option for Verizon subscribers looking for a sub-$500 phone.

Motorola Moto Z3

The Motorola Moto Z3 is the "first 5G phone," in that it will have an optional add-on for Verizon's 5G network next year. Until then, it stands on its own merits as a solid phone and a good way to try out Moto Mods.

Slim. Extensible with Moto Mods. Solid overall performance.

Dated processor. Below average low-light camera. Some carrier bloatware. Promised Mods are slow to appear.

The Moto Z3 Play isn't a flagship phone. With last year's processor, a 1080p screen, and an average camera, it can't compete with the latest and greatest like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or the OnePlus 6. Fortunately for Motorola, it's not meant to. The...

Motorola Moto Z3 Play

The Motorola Moto Z3 Play keeps the dream of Moto Mods alive, but doesn't deliver any stunning new features.

Works with all existing Moto Mods. Rich AMOLED screen. Elegant software build.

Awkwardly priced. Average processor.

The Moto Z3 Play has plenty going for it, including solid overall performance, a capable camera, and support for Motorola's useful modular backs. Unfortunately, it runs into the same problem as the One Plus 6—the US just doesn't have a market for $500...

Motorola Moto Z3 Play review: the thrill is gone

Blue phone blues

Sleek design and premium build quality ; Great software additions ; Works with Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile

Thin design leaves little room for battery or headphone jack ; Fingerprint scanner is awkward to use ; Battery life is below average, adding a mod makes the phone big and unwieldy

The Moto Z3 Play feels like a baseball team slogging through the last couple of months of play, knowing that they need to finish the season but also knowing they won’t end it with a trophy in hand. Motorola committed to supporting the design of its...

Motorola Moto Z3 Play Review

This year's Moto Z3 Play is trekking into new territory with its higher price point. Price aside, it's going to take a whole lot for this year's phone to really prove itself in the face of some today's competitively priced flagships...

Camera captures stunning looking photos ; Tons of fun camera modes ; Speedy recharge time ; Premium design

Sluggish performance with graphics processing ; Finger print sensor is constantly being accidentally pressed ; Weak sounding speaker ; $100 increase in price over its predecessor

Moto Z3 Hands-on: A Bargain Flagship with a 5G Future

The Moto Z3 looks as though it could be a surprisingly good value for Verizon customers and potentially one day an entry point to 5G — even if it carries last year's processor

Moto Z3 Play Review: Modular Design, Midrange Price

The Z3 Play beats a familiar drum. Once again, Motorola has produced a midrange handset that doesn't necessarily excel in any one category, but unlocks an ecosystem of potentially interesting accessories.

Works on all carriers ; AMOLED display ; Attractive, thin design ; Comes with Power Pack mod

No headphone jack ; Performance is just okay for the price ; No water resistance ; Poor low-light shots

The Moto Z3 Play's stunning cyan exterior and ecosystem of mods dress up average performance, battery life and photography.

Moto Z3 Play review: Playing it safe but where's the fun?

Motorola is back with a premium smartphone for those of us who want a smartphone that's higher end than the Moto G6 Plus, while still being compatible with Moto Mods, all at an affordable price. This third opus of the Moto Z Play series is still...

Battery life ; Compatible with Moto Mods ; Navigation with gestures

Camera ; No headphone jack ; Price

The Moto Z3 left me with mixed feelings. It’s not a bad smartphone and will meet most of the expectations you’d have for a smartphone in 2018, but this model offers no added value over the competition, except for the Moto Mods.

It's getting 5G with a Moto Mod, but how's the phone itself?
