Hands on: Motorola MotoSmart review

The new MotoSmart comes with a fairly average feature set but a budget price tag - is it enough to compete at the lower end of the market?

SD card support ; Loud speakers ; Nice Motorola video player app ; Solid chassis

Poor camera ; Little app storage ; Rough old version of Android ; Unresponsive lock screen

Motorola Motosmart

Motorola's MotoSmart may be cheap, but it struggles against similarly priced competitors.

Excellent build quality ; Great call quality ; Motorola has made some interesting tweaks to the phone's OS

Terrible camera ; Sluggish performance ; Poor screen ; Short battery life

The Motosmart has to make do with a small 3.5inch screen that's got a pretty limited resolution of 320x480 pixels - fine a few years ago but things have moved on. While it's okay for stuff like emails and text messages, it's a bit of a bind when you're...

Plodding performance ; Stale version of Android ; Ugly Motorola software ; Low-res screen ; Weak battery ; Poor camera

The Motorola Motosmart has an alluring price tag but plodding performance, a weak battery and an unlovely screen ensure it never shines. As a simple smart phone for basic apps and lightweight web browsing, it can suffice. But there are some excellent...

Motorola Motosmart - Initial Impressions

Yesterday we got our hands on the new budget phone from Motorola the Motosmart. It's bascially a smaller and slightly lower Motoluxe. Normally the smaller versions of devices are abysmal, like the Xperia X8 or some of the smaller Galaxy [...

Product Motorola Motosmart Website Motorola Specifications Single-core 600MHz Qualcomm MSM727, 3.5in 480x320 touchscreen, 3MP rear-facing camera, 512MB of internal storage expandable to 32GB, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, GSM/HSPA+, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi,...

Cheap, battery is good, feels fairly sturdy

Slow processor, outdated software with no chance of an upgrade

This means that those buying it really shouldn't be expecting cutting edge, or even mediocre performance or technology, with Motorola having cut pretty much every corner it could to keep the Motosmart's price down
