Nokia 808 PureView review: the future of mobile imaging, wrapped in the smartphone past

The PureView 808 is easily the best cameraphone yet. But if you're obsessed with imaging quality, be prepared to compromise on performance and usability.

Best cameraphone everSuperb video and audio recordingScreen easily viewable outdoors

Low-res displayApp store lacks the range and breadth of rivalsSymbian Belle OS is temperamental and unintuitive

The Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone out there, but you'll have to be willing to forgo the simplicity, function and comfort of competing smartphones if you intend to own it. You also have to be seriously imaging-obsessed to handle this as...

Nokia 808 PureView review: Photo Finnish

The Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone ever made. End of story. Now, how do you proceed from there? And why is this particular phone so hard to write about? How about because a picture is worth a thousand words and we just had a...

Nokia 808 PureView in low-light: From dusk till dawn

The fact that Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone money can buy is sure as shooting. This won't even pass for a pun. The 41 megapixel sensor and the tack-sharp optics deliver what no other smartphone can match and we even saw it successfully...

If, after reading this article, you thought that Olympus and Canon should start trembling with fear, you are wrong. Image quality is one thing, but cameraphones lack the versatility of the larger sensor cameras with interchangeable optics, so DSLRs and...

Nokia 808 PureView blind test: The sum of all pixels

The Nokia 808 PureView has finally landed in swirling storms of hype. And of course, it wasn't given a chance to catch a breath. We didn't meet it empty-handed either. We had a finger on the shutter of some mean cameraphones and an EVIL digicam...

Nokia 808 PureView in focus: Interview with D. Dinning

The Nokia 808 PureView certainly made a splash at this year's Mobile World Congress, pinning the company back on the cameraphone map in an extremely advantageous position.

Nokia 808 PureView (unlocked) review

The Nokia 808 PureView was an immediate hit at Mobile World Congress in February, for one reason and one reason alone: its jaw-dropping 41-megapixel camera commanded attention. Never intended for U.S. markets, the PureView runs on the Symbian OS,...

The Nokia 808 PureView 's excellent, envelope-pushing 41-megapixel camera will satisfy photo enthusiasts. It also has strong battery life, an HDMI port, and steady call quality.

A slower processor doesn't match the 808 PureView's camera prowess, and it's saddled with a bulky body, a cramped virtual keyboard, and software that's behind the curve.

Even if you're only interested in its sharp, innovative camera, the Nokia 808 PureView's weak Symbian Belle OS and slower processor make it a questionable investment considering the price, especially since Symbian's days are numbered.

Review: Nokia 808 PureView

The Nokia 808 PureView is captivating because of one feature, and one feature alone: the on-board 41-megapixel camera. Everything else about it is a disaster.

The camera produces the best images of any smartphone. Low noise in stills and videos. Multiple setting options allowing you to adjust for different subjects and lighting

Still running on Symbian, though it’s been re-named “Nokia Belle” here in an attempt to escape the shame associated with the Symbian brand. Body is awkwardly shaped and heavy because of the protruding camera. Will set you back 0 — as much as some Micro...

Nokia 808 PureView (Unlocked)

The Nokia 808 PureView is a curious unlocked smartphone with an amazing camera, but virtually no appeal to U.S. consumers otherwise.

Groundbreaking 41-megapixel camera. Unlocked; compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile 3G networks. Nifty screen lock switch.

No 4G. Call connection issues. Archaic Symbian OS is a relic. Hit-or-miss touch response. Few apps. Some preloaded apps are broken. Expensive even for an unlocked phone. Poor battery life.

There's a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack on top that works with the bundled wired earbuds as well as any aftermarket headphones you may want to use. Music tracks sounded clear and punchy through Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headphones ($99.99,...

Nokia 808 PureView review

Beats every other cameraphone by a wide margin ; 38-megapixel photos are surprisingly good ; Great call quality

Web browser is unusable ; Symbian Belle feels like a terrible imitation of Android ; Low-res display ; Camera hump is a hindrance

The 808 PureView is like an armored dinosaur — a visually stunning, internally primitive, beast of fantasy
