Nokia Lumia 530 review: Terrible display and camera outweigh Windows Phone 8.1 features

Going by the name, the Nokia Lumia 530 might seem like an iterative refresh to last year's Lumia 520. But a look at the specs leave you wondering if Microsoft intended a downgrade from the successful predecessor. It comes with lesser storage space –...

When shopping for a Windows phone there are some obvious caveats you need to be aware of. While the Windows Store has improved a lot from its previous iterations, it still lacks the variety and quality you’ll find in the Android and iOS app stores....

Nokia Lumia 530 ( dark grey)

The Nokia Lumia 530 belongs to the ilk of smartphones that dives for the lowest cost it can, and celebrates it. Prospective buyers of this phone are driven by price and not performance; the Lumia 530's specs are just enough to fulfill basic...

The inexpensive Nokia Lumia 530 is equipped for HSPA+ speeds and can hold up to 128GB in external storage. It includes Microsoft's most current Windows Phone OS.

A surprisingly slippery body makes you a constant butterfingers, and typing is tough on the small screen. The fixed focus camera won't take close-up shots.

Since specs are decidedly basic, its low price is the major reason to seek out the Nokia Lumia 530.

Newer, but not better: The Nokia Lumia 530 reviewed

Microsoft's budget Windows Phone is often outdone by its predecessor.

Can usually be picked up for between $50 and $70 if you don't mind carrier exclusivity ; Solid build quality with colorful shells ; Smooth performance ; Gives you all the basic smartphone stuff ; 4GB of internal storage is easily expandable via...

Easiest to find in its carrier-locked form ; CPU, GPU, Wi-Fi, screen resolution, camera, and cellular performance are fine for the price but poor compared to midrange and flagship phones ; 512MB of RAM prevents some apps from running, prompts frequent...

The Lumia 520's battery life was merely OK, and the 530 continues in that proud tradition. It uses an identical 1430mAh battery (literally identical, not just in capacity) and it can squeeze out a few more minutes at the "medium" brightness setting....

Nokia Lumia 530 review

A small smartphone for a small price

Very cheap ; Micro SD card support ; Snappy performance ; Easy to use one-handed

No front camera ; No flash ; Limited battery life ; Fairly poor display

If Nokia had just improved the 520 specs across the board then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this, but it has actually taken two steps forward and one step back with the 530.

Nokia Lumia 530: Bang for your Windows Phone buck (hands-on)

In many ways, it's the budget end of the smartphone rainbow where all the excitement is. The feature phone market has eaten itself, unable to fend off the march to more and more affordable smartphones. Nokia has been playing in this space for some time...

Nokia Lumia 530 UK smartphone review

The Lumia 530 retails for just £60. It will be the first smartphone for a multitude of people, and at that price it will fly off the shelves of every high-street phone store. And it will be available just about everywhere.

The disappointing thing about the Nokia Lumia 530 is that it feels like a worse phone than the Lumia 520 it replaces (albeit with a price cut). The display is a deal breaker for us, undoing the good work of the Lumia 530's performance and build...

Nokia Lumia 530 vs 520 comparison review

Many people (including me) have criticised Windows Phone in the past for many things. One of the biggest barriers preventing people (including me) from switching from their iPhones and Android smartphones is that the apps people want simply aren't...

It’s too early to give a definitive verdict on which smartphone is better, but it’s almost certainly not worth buying a 530 if you already have a 520. We’ll bring you a full review of the 530 when we can get our hands on one, and we’ll update this...

Motorola Moto G vs Nokia Lumia 530 comparison

The Motorola Moto G is the king of budget smartphones but Microsoft has just announced the Lumia 520 as a follow-on to the Lumia 520. What's the best budget smartphone? Read our Motorola Moto G vs Nokia Lumia 530 comparison (See our full: Nokia Lumia...

Despite being cheaper we don't think the Nokia Lumia 530 has what it takes to knock the Motorola Moto G from its budget smartphone throne. It has a lower hardware specs across the board and even though Windows Phone 8.1 includes many improvements,...
