Oppo R5 review: One to remember

The world's thinnest smartphone record is as fragile as a piece of china. It was broken three times in the last couple of months alone. The Gionee Elife S5.1 was first with a ridiculously slim 5.1mm profile, but its moment of triumph was just that - a...

5.2" 16M-color 1080p Super AMOLED touchscreen, 423ppi ; Android OS v4.4.4 KitKat with Color OS ; Octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU (4x 1.7GHz plus 4x 1.0GHz), 2GB of RAM, Adreno 405 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset ; 13MP autofocus camera, dual-LED flash;...

No 4K video or 1080p@60fps recording at launch ; No FM radio ; No microSD card slot and no higher capacity option ; No 3.5mm audio jack (microUSB to 3.5mm adapter supplied) ; No NFC ; Relatively low battery capacity

Creating the R5, Oppo was obviously laser focused on delivering exquisite design and build quality, and making a sizzling first impression. And well, they delivered that in spades.

Oppo R5 review

Oppo's R5 is a seriously gorgeous phone. Clad in metal, it's super-thin -- just 4.85mm (0.19 inches) deep, and it weighs a scant 155 grams (5.5 ounces). It's certainly impressive, but this comes at the loss of the 3.5mm audio jack, so you'll have to...

The Oppo R5 has a ridiculously sleek profile with a metal frame that feels solid and well-built.

Despite having an octa-core processor, the phone is oftentimes sluggish. The 13-megapixel camera takes a while to start, too. The thin frame means there's no headphone jack or microSD card slot.

Oppo has created a beautiful phone that shows plenty of promise, but it needs to iron out the kinks in its performance if it's to stand out against the cheaper competition.

Oppo R5 ( gold)

For Android fans envious of the iPhone 6 's slim frame, well, look no further. The R5's ultra-slim body beats the iPhone handily, and will draw envious stares from other Android owners as well.

Oppo R5 (Unlocked)

With a premium build and Impossibly thin profile, the unlocked Oppo R5 might just be the most physically impressive Android smartphone you can buy. All that beauty comes at the expense of performance, however.

Stunningly thin and supremely well built. Sharp and vibrant AMOLED display. Great camera performance.

Poor U.S. network compatibility. Sluggish performance at times.

Camera and Conclusions Oppo uses Sony's 13-megapixel Exmor R IMX214 sensor for the R5, which is the same one featured on devices like the OnePlus One and Google Nexus 6 . We really liked the camera performance on both of those phones, and our results...

Oppo R5 Review

The super-slim, 0.19" (4.85mm) Oppo R5 was announced at the end of October and was quickly proclaimed the thinnest smartphone in the world - an impressively elegant handset, obviously meant to please users who place aesthetics as a top factor when...

Super-slim ; Elegant design and sturdy body

Battery life is below the norm ; Loudspeaker lacks volume and depth ; Call quality could be better ; Lack of a 3.5mm audio jack makes replacing the headset an inconvenience ; An overly inaccurate, bluish display

A very elegant handset with a sizable display to boot – the R5 seems to be for casual users, who prefer their smartphone to be a modestly used tech accessory, rather than a tool for long surfing and gaming sessions. Physically, the device provides a...

Oppo R5 Smartphone Review

Smartphone manufacturers are obsessed with thinness. Being the 'best at' this or 'most' that gives you bragging rights and that's what Chinese OEM Oppo appears to be after with the R5. At just 4.85mm thick, it's a pretty impressive form factor, though...

Attractive, ultra-slim design with a decent AMOLED display.

Slim design leads to woeful battery life. High-end price for mid-range performance and camera. Mediocre software. No 3.5mm audio jack or microSD card slot.

After using the Oppo R5 as my daily driver for over a week, I’m left completely unconvinced that slim designs are the best option for today’s smartphones. Considering its flagship level price –

Oppo R5 review: Thin is an understatement

When thin just isn't enough.

Excellent build quality, fit & finish ; Large Super AMOLED display on a thin chassis ; Incredibly thin and comfortable to hold ; Bevy of software features and options ; VOOC Rapid Charging

Just average battery life ; Laggy software ; No 3.5mm headphone jack ; Only 16GB of non-expandable storage

Overall my experience with the Oppo R5 has been positive when it comes to hardware. If you’re a power user, the lack of expandable storage, a flagship processor, and a headphone jack would most likely have you looking to other Oppo options like the...

Oppo R5 review: Among the most innovative of smartphones

The underdog from China has beaten the big brands to many 'world firsts'.

Thin 5mm profile ; Fantastic 5.2-inch AMOLED display ; Second generation VOOC fast charger ; High resolution front camera

Tiny 2000 milliamp-hour battery

Oppo R5

The thinnest phone in the world

Real tech heads may also miss some of the little extras that feature is some of the bigger-name phones like the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5. For example, the Oppo R5 doesn’t have an IR transmitter, used to make a phone act like a universal remote....
