Review: RIM BlackBerry 8830

All work and no play makes a phone a BlackBerry. At least the 8830 adds video and music (but no camera) to RIM's robust communications...

Powers up in a flash. Solid speakerphone. Backlight levels adjust automatically to ambient light. Still-unrivaled mobile email. It’s a world phone: Budapest, here we come

Wide 2.6-inch body. No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth stereo. Music player doesn’t do DRM. New trackball, which might come as a shock to BlackBerry diehards, can be imprecise

RIM BlackBerry 8830 (Sprint)

Sprint outdoes Verizon with its global BlackBerry 8830.

Seamless global roaming with unlocked SIM card slot. Free and for-pay GPS options. Excellent media player. Long battery life.

No support for DRM music or Bluetooth stereo. Poor options for editing Microsoft Office documents.

BlackBerry 8830 - black (Sprint) review

Editor's note: Portions of this review were taken from our evaluation of the RIM BlackBerry 8830 for Verizon Wireless, as the two devices share a similar design and feature set. This review has been updated with the correct SAR rating. We apologize for...

The RIM BlackBerry 8830 offers dual-mode functionality so you can use the phone globally. It's EV-DO capable; has a built-in GPS radio; an integrated music and video player; and offers solid performance. The Sprint version also features unlocked SIM...

The BlackBerry 8830 is on the larger side. There is no camera option, and the phone doesn't support stereo Bluetooth headsets. Callers reported distorted speakerphone quality.

For the globe-trotting executive, the RIM BlackBerry 8830 is a powerful voice and messaging tool that offers world roaming and solid performance.

BlackBerry 8800 review

Up until now, globe-trotting Verizon Wireless customers may have felt a bit stymied by the limited world-roaming capabilities of the CDMA network. Sure, you can use CDMA in other countries but if your itinerary includes Europe, you're out of luck. But...

The BlackBerry 8830 doesn't support Verizon's V Cast services at the moment, and the handset is on the larger side. There is no camera option and the phone doesn't support stereo Bluetooth headsets.

BlackBerry 8830 (Sprint)

To recap from my earlier review, in case you missed it, I found the 8830 to be a wide, flat (4.5 by 2.6 by 0.6 inches, weighing 4.6 ounces) device, with sculpted keys that aren't quite as comfortable as the widely separated keys on older BlackBerrys,...

No support for DRM music or Bluetooth stereo. Poor options for editing Microsoft Office documents

Sprint's version of this easy-to-use, global smartphone is better than Verizon's, with more software, GPS capabilities, and the freedom of an unlocked SIM card slot. It's also hands-down the best business-friendly smartphone on Sprint's network for...

Blackberry 8830 Smart Phone

Voice command, broadband Internet capability, trackball, and much faster

Ringtone volume is too low and the side button is not designed properly

This is my third Blackberry and I am very pleased with its performance, quality, and the way it is built.
