Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

Samsung released compact versions of its flagship Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 phones, so it was no surprise when the Galaxy S5 Mini was announced. Although those Mini phones bore the name of their flagship brother, all were in fact heavily watered-down...

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has the same rubberised design as its full-size brother, it's waterproof, with a vivid screen and decent camera.

Like all of Samsung's previous smaller flagships, the S5 Mini seriously waters down the specs of the top-end phone, meaning it's just a mid-range phone with a flagship name and high price. The plastic design feels far less luxurious than the metal HTC...

If you've been hoping for a fully-fledged flagship phone with all the bells and whistles of the the other elite mobiles just in a more compact size, prepare to be disappointed. The Galaxy S5 Mini matches the regular S5 in name and looks, but not in...

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini review: Big enough

With two Galaxy S minis under its belt, Samsung has set off on a quest for a third, hopefully more successful version of its current flagship. But the rules have changed and Samsung has finally stopped ignoring this fact. While Sony flipped the mini...

Optional Dual SIM version available ; LTE connectivity ; 4.5" 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display with 326 ppi ; Android OS v4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz UI ; Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Exynos 3 Quad 3470 chipset, Mali-400MP4 GPU, 1.5GB of RAM ;...

Uncompetitive price at launch ; No TV-Out option (MHL is not supported) ; Only the LTE variant has NFC ; Lacks in-call noise-cancellation

On its own, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is a merely a good midrange smartphone. Next to it's bigger sibling - it's probably Samsung's best mini to date. It retains what makes the bigger flagship desirable and cleverly mimics its superb performance so...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini review

Another year, another Samsung Mini — is this one any better? Even with the arrival of smaller flagship-level handsets like the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, "mini" Android smartphones typically occupy the mid-range space. This was the case with last year's...

Another competent (if not exciting) mid-ranger from Samsung ... The Galaxy S5 Mini is yet another competent mid-range phone from Samsung, and one that incorporates the majority of the hallmark features of its current flagship. It's a phone which...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini review

The Galaxy S5 gets shrunk, but smaller isn't always better

Water and dust resistant ; Decent battery life ; Screen is bright and colourful

Dodgy fingerprint scanner ; Interface isn't the quickest ; Plastic body feels cheap

If you're taken with the Galaxy S5's design, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, but can't afford its lofty price tag - or want a handset that's more manageable in the hand - then the Galaxy S5 Mini is a strong replacement.

Liked the Samsung Galaxy S5 but found it just too big to handle? Maybe smaller is better! Fnd out in our Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini review

Water resistant ; Bright ; colourful screen ; Lots of tech

Average battery life ; Divisive design ; Small virtual keyboard

This is a well-designed, powerfully specced phone that will suit all sizes of hands from the smallest to the most sausage-fingered - though the latter will need to type carefully.

The smaller S5 is good, but we want more

Bright, vibrant screen ; Very capable 8-megapixel camera ; Great battery life

Plastic back feels cheaper than on S5 ; Some missing TouchWiz features

Like most smaller AMOLED, the S5 Mini uses a PenTile array. This relates to the arrangement of sub pixels that make up a single pixel in the display. Samsung uses four sub pixels as opposed to three, which most smartphone displays use. Those sub pixels...

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini vs Samsung Galaxy Alpha comparison review

The Galaxy Alpha, on the other hand, seems to be Samsung's stab at the iPhone 5s (or maybe the upcoming iPhone 6), with a metal frame around the edge. The rear cover of the Alpha is still plastic, though.

Overall, the Galaxy S5 mini and Galaxy Alpha are reasonably evenly matched smartphones from Samsung. With just 0.2in difference between the screen size, your decision between the two will come down to metal vs plastic when it comes to design. Of...

The Galaxy S5 gets blasted with the shrink ray

Good battery life Dazzling OLED display contrast Super-convenient waterproofing

CPU not super-powered Screen a mite less sharp than the S5 A bit pricey

This isn't just a small Galaxy S5, it’s a cut-down one, but it still offers a fairly top-notch phone experience

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini review

Like the Samsung Galaxy S5, the S5 mini is a very decent Android phone. Our key concerns lie in its pricing and performance: while most users will find it more than fast enough for day-to-day tasks, the price tag is a lot higher than we'd like to pay...

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini vs Galaxy S4 mini comparison review

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S5 mini, but the firm is launching it first in Russia to be followed by a global release. This means we don't yet know when it will arrive in the UK but it should be within a couple of months. For now we can...

The Galaxy S5 mini adds a reasonable amount of upgrades compared to the Galaxy S4 mini. These include better components, more storage, a waterproof design and newer software. Let's not forget the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor either. It's...
