Samsung BlackJack II (SGH-i617) Review

By Damon Brown (digitaltrends.com)

Award: RECOMMENDED PRODUCT

Originally released in 2006, the first BlackJack gave more high-end (and expensive) handhelds a run for their money with its sleek design, easy use and overall approachable setup. The new BlackJack isn't so much a redesign as it is an upgrade. Lovers...

Simple to use; stylish and compact; affordable

Poor video quality; inconsistent media downloading; headphones are not included

The BlackJack II offers the best of the original: the power of a PDA with the ease of a basic Smartphone.

Samsung Samsung BlackJack II

Samsung took almost everything about the first BlackJack and turned it up a notch, making a good PDA phone a little better. Though the BlackJack II doesn't look drastically different from the original and still leaves room for improvement, the subtle...

Improved keypad design ; Feels responsive and offers useful apps

Mediocre sound quality ; Feels cheap; easily shows thumbprints

This slim, good-performing smart phone can handle your calling, messaging, and mobile-entertainment needs.

Samsung BlackJack II

By Mark Spoonauer (laptopmag.com)

It should be called the 1.5, but the BlackJack 2 is still one of the best value-priced smart phones.

Stylish design with convenient jog wheel ; Fast HSDPA data ; Improved battery life ; Very good call quality ; Built-in GPS

Poor and slow camera ; No Wi-Fi ; Doesn't support over-the-air music downloads

Samsung BlackJack II - pink (AT&T) review

By Bonnie Cha (cnet.com)

The Samsung BlackJack II improves on its predecessor with Windows Mobile 6; GPS; a 2-megapixel camera; and more memory and better performance. The smartphone also features a larger display and enhanced full QWERTY keyboard as well as HSDPA support,...

The front jog wheel feels loose and unresponsive, and the smartphone uses Samsung's proprietary connector port for headsets and other accessories. The BlackJack II lacks Wi-Fi, and there's also no support for voice dialing. We also had some ActiveSync...

Although the Samsung BlackJack II doesn't bring any revolutionary upgrades, there are a number of welcome additions, including GPS and better performance, to make it a worthy successor and a good-value smartphone.

The BlackJack II is a bit larger than the original, weighing 4.1 ounces—about half an ounce more—and measuring 4.4 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD), which is a little thicker as well. Screen size is up to 2.4 inches, though it retains the same...

Sharp styling. Improved QWERTY keyboard. Good voice quality. Fast 3G performance. Battery life tops that of other HSDPA-enabled devices

Still no Wi-Fi. Windows Mobile 6 is as sluggish as usual. Poor camera

A sleek update to the popular original, the BlackJack II adds TeleNav GPS, AT&T Video Share, and more—while still keeping the price affordable.

Final Thoughts on the BlackJack II

By Mitchell Oke (geardiary.com)

In March I bought a BlackJack II off eBay US, since I wanted a cheap smartphone with a keyboard. It was very cheap, had HSDPA (important) and ran Windows Mobile 6, so I was pretty happy. But not long after I got it I realised it just wasn't quite...

I found the BlackJack II too have a rather poor radio, it’s signal strength was always pathetic. Worse than that, often when it would lose signal it would not reconnect to the network properly, therefore calls, messages and emails didn’t come through.
