Samsung S7230E Wave 723 review: Waving Hello!

It's been smooth sailing for Samsung's Bada OS and the Samsung S7230E Wave 723 is one of the first of the lineup aimed at the mass market. But beware, this smartphone may change the way you perceive feature phones forever...

3.2" 256K-color TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen, WQVGA (240 x 400 pixels), multi-touch input support ; Solid 11.8mm-thin metal body with detachable protective flap with leather texture ; Bada OS with Samsung Apps ; Quad-band GSM support with dual-band...

Low resolution screen ; Limited number of available applications ; No lens cover ; No DivX/XviD video support ; Web browser performs poorly with Flash ; Card slot is under the battery ; Preinstalled SatNav software is a trial only ; No ambient light...

Okay, back to shore – we had a fun time cruising with the Samsung S7230E Wave 723. Let’s get the negative impressions out of the way first – there is only a couple of those.

Samsung Wave 723 Review

Samsung Wave 723 is the fourth bada phone announced (after the lowly Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro), and it is already coming to market. Now we have our own unit here to examine how bada feels without all the hardware bells and whistles of the original Wave...

Samsung Wave 723 S7230E Review

Samsung spawned several Bada-based phones following the success of the Samsung Wave, one of which is the Samsung Wave 723 S7230E. The phone is only for portfolio building but it is packed with great features and priced affordably as a mid-range option.

Samsung Wave 723 (S7230)

The primary hardware features of the Wave 723 are a 3.2" 240 x 400 pixel display, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and 3.5G support. Usefully, the Wave 723 comes with a detachable leather style flip to protect the screen.

Samsung Wave 723 review

The Samsung Wave 723 (GT-S7230E) is Samsung's latest Bada phone. If you remember, that's their own mobile phone software platform. Launched at MWC 2010 on the Samsung Wave, the company has always said it is committed to the platform. It is perhaps...

Great build quality, responsive screen, good level of connectivity for an affordable phone, camera pretty good

Some Bada oddities, none of the excitement of being part of a grander system like Android, poor video capture and playback, Samsung Apps can't compete with rival stores

The Samsung Wave 723 works well enough, but you can get much more joy for your money elsewhere

Samsung Wave 723 review

Samsung's second Bada handset demonstrates that less is definitely less

Good user-interface design ; High-quality stills camera ; Nice flip cover ; Responsive screen ; Pocket-friendly size

Small app store ; Not enough on-board widgets ; Poor video camera ; Poor video format support ; Short battery life

Samsung Wave 723

A responsive touchscreen and full spread of connectivity options, but the lack of Android disappoints.

Accessible OS ; Bundled with flip case ; Physical camera button

Low-resolution screen ; Limited app support

The metal backplate doesn’t entirely remove the slightly cheap feel of the plastic-bodied phone, either, which is far removed from the dense and compact body of the original Samsung Wave. Before you accuse us of harking back to unfair comparisons,...

Samsung Wave 723 review

The Samsung Wave 723 is a perfectly serviceable touchscreen phone with a good selection of features, but there are too many cheap, powerful Android phones that do the same job and lots more

Responsive touchscreen ; Multi-touch zoom ; Wi-fi and HSDPA ; Customisable home screens

Small range of widgets ; Empty app store ; Sluggish at times

The Samsung Wave 723 is a solid, usable touchscreen phone for anyone on a budget, and we wouldn't have hesitated to recommend it -- if it was 2009. The capacitive touchscreen is responsive, the on-screen keyboard is pleasantly usable, and the few...

Samsung Wave 723 Review

"The Samsung Wave 723 is a budget Bada phone with a 3.2-inch touchscreen with the protection of a leather flip case."

Similar to Android, OVI and iOS, Bada is designed to offer you access to apps via an app store. It's not a huge app store yet but Samsung seems keen on investing more time and money into Bada so we hope developers will follow suit.

Samsung Wave 723

With one fairly impressive Bada phone out of the gate, it hasn't taken Samsung long to follow up with its second budget-conscious smartphone.

There's no word yet from Samsung Australia about whether we'll see the Wave 723 down under this year, but we'll update this preview as soon as we know any differently.
