Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Review

It's refreshing to see a smartphone manufacturer produce a smaller smartphone without feeling the need to scrimp on the specs. Sony's Xperia Z1 Compact retains the majority of its bigger sibling's cutting edge hardware, but fits comfortably in the...

Manageable size ; Speedy performance ; Premium design ; Waterproof and dustproof ; MicroSD support ; Battery life

Fingerprint and dust magnet ; Big bezels above and below screen ; Flaps on ports ; No selectable macro mode ; Pre-applied ASF

Sony has nailed a market segment that needs some love. The Z1 Compact is the best small smartphone running Android.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: when smaller is better

For the longest time, the prevailing trend with mobile phones was to take last year's handset and make it smaller. Shave a few millimeters off, shed a couple of grams, and give users the same experience but in a leaner shell. The rise of smartphones...

Best screen on a Sony smartphone to date ; Battery is a gift that keeps on giving ; Flagship performance in a compact size ; Waterproof and built to last

Not as friendly to the palm as curvier phones ; Camera is hindered by over-processing of images ; Doesn’t ship with the latest version of Android, but does include bloatware

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: a good thing in a small(ish) package

Last year, Sony finally reached the end of the alphabet with its Xperia Z. It wasn't just that the company ran out of letters, though: With the Xperia Z,

Flagship-caliber specs ; Premium build quality ; Excellent performance, long battery life ; Great camera ; Improved display offers better viewing angles than older Sony handsets

More expensive than other "mini" phones ; Minor software issues

Sony has set the benchmark for mini-flagships. With strong build quality and robust performance, the Z1 Compact will be a welcome arrival for anyone who prefers smaller devices.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact ( white)

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact packs the same blisteringly powerful quad-core processor, 4G LTE connectivity and 20-megapixel camera as Sony's top-end Xperia Z1 . It has a 4.3-inch display, rather than the palm-stretching 5 inches of its brother, making it...

Its small size makes it comfortable to use, it has a searingly powerful processor, a good camera and decent battery life. It looks brilliant too and its waterproof design means you don't need to worry about dropping it in the bath.

It's not running the latest version of Android and some of Sony's software tweaks don't really add anything to the experience.

With its powerful processor, great camera, decent screen and gorgeous, waterproof design, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the best small Android phone around.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: Mini gone big

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support; 3G with 42Mbps HSPA; 150Mbps LTE, 4.3" 16M-color 720p capacitive touchscreen Triluminos display (342pixel density); X-Reality engine; shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass, Android OS v4.3 Jelly Bean with custom UI,...

Weak LED flash, Non-user-replaceable battery, Below average loudspeaker performance (probably due to level of waterproofing)

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the first phone to give up the name but rightfully claim the true title of a flagship mini. It took a while too, considering we've had "minis" for a couple of generations now. It is, without exaggeration, unique in its...

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact hands-on: First look

We recently had the chance to get some hands-on time with Sony's new flagship in miniature, the Xperia Z1 Compact. The little fella packs flagship-grade specs into a much smaller footprint than most of today's premium smartphones.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Review

We don't necessarily have to view the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact as an alternative to the popular Android flagships that are currently available. There is another function that Sony's latest handset might be willing to perform, and that is to compete with...

Stylish, compact design ; Cutting-edge performance ; Great camera ; Water- and dust-resistnace (IP 58)

Relatively small display ; Minor UI issues

With the Xperia Z1 Compact, Sony has made an important move that will make its smartphone line-up considerably more approachable. The Z1 is a powerful and well-rounded product, but its imposing size meant that there will undoubtedly be a lot of people...

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Review

The Xperia Z1 Compact offers a perfect size, exceptional hardware and a powerful performance package. The smartphone is definitely the most powerful mini-version of a flagship smartphone and it has the potential to stand up against major high-end...

Premium look and finish, Fast performance and high-end hardware, 20.7MP camera works great, Waterproof and dust proof certification, Great battery life

Glass finish is prone to fingerprints, Flaps for water protection do not seem reliable, Average loudspeaker performance, Not as slim as the Xperia Z1

It certainly has its target market — those who yearn for a powerful handset in a not-so-huge form factor.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Review

In the world smartphones there are typically two choices: large-screened handsets with top-end specs, and smaller devices with mid-range internals. Sony is bucking the trend with a no-compromise, ultra-portable handset for those that don't want to...

Superb 20-megapixel camera is easily best-in-class. Compact handset with high-end, powerful hardware. Premium design that's also water resistant. Great battery life.

Display quality could be better. A few software oddities.

Inside the Xperia Z1 Compact you’ll find an 8.74 Wh (2,300 mAh, 3.8 V) non-removable battery, which is fairly large for this class of handsets. Compared to the Xperia Z1, the Z1 Compact has a 26% smaller display paired with a 23% smaller battery, and...
