Cell Phones

SanDisk's 16GB microSDHC and M2 memory cards

The only trouble is downloading enough choons to fit onto the cards

That they're the world's largest; The easy transfer process

They get lost easily as they're so darn small; Not enough mobiles can take 16GB cards yet

If you use your mobile phone as an MP3 player, grab one of these

BlackBerry Curve 8520

RIM's recession-friendly BlackBerry

Emailing and messaging, still the best around; Optical trackpad; Dedicated music buttons

Disappointing web browsing experience; Poor quality camera; Overly-complicated menu system

Despite a couple of obvious flaws, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is still up there with the best when it comes to email and messaging, proving itself to be a more-than-able media player and social network hub as a bonus.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

Touchscreen tech on a budget

Animated menu transitions; 3.5mm jack, Wi-Fi and GPS with geo tagging; The price point is also the clear selling point

Lacks certain features; Camera could do with sprucing up a bit; Call quality and coverage was also a little suspect at times

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is likely to be the budget hit of 2009. The screen quality and media options are plentiful, and while we would have loved to see 3G on board, the battery life saving is a real boon. Overall, we like a lot

HTC Hero / T-Mobile G2 Touch

HTC Hero mobile phone review

By Rhiain Morgan

We need a Hero!

HTC Sense UI; Ease-of-use; Stonking touchscreen

Below par camera; Slight lag; Video performance

The Hero is a fantastic step-up from both the HTC G1 and Magic. With the new Sense UI and Android strapped to it's back it's a true contender for the do-it-all phone top spot.

Toshiba TG01

Is it just a bit of tosh?

Huge screen; Speedy processor

Archaic WinMo 6.1; Poor performance

We wish Toshiba waited that little bit long for WinMo 6.5 as at the moment it feels like so close but yet so far for Tosh and its TG01

Nokia N86

Nokia finally gets the shutter bug

Great camera; Oodles of features and options for shooting; All round media performance

Sluggish Symbian OS; Tacky build quality; Small screen

It's been a long time coming, but it was certainly worth the wait for this fantastic camera phone.

Sony Ericsson W995

Can two become one?

Walkman functionality; Solid body

Sluggish accelerometer; Poor performing camera

A funky mover of a music phone. If you're looking for a music phone with sounds on par to a high-end MP3 player you won't go far wrong with the W995

Apple iPhone 3GS

It's an all out smartphone war

So we have the Palm Pre, with its elegantly integrated mail, calendar system and super-slick webOS. Then there are two contenders from HTC – the Android-powered Magic and the more traditional Windows Mobile experience of the Touch Pro 2 – both ...
