Sony Ericsson Yari

Sony Ericsson Yari

By Joseph Hanlon

The Yari looks great but doesn't have stellar features or applications. If you're in it for the games then be prepared for a serious disappointment.

Sharp design, Great battery life, MS Exchange email support, Good camera

Gesture games are rubbish, No 3.5mm headphone socket, Keypad design makes texting difficult

BlackBerry Bold 9700

BlackBerry Bold 9700

By Joseph Hanlon

It's been a long time between 3G phones, but RIM has finally unveiled the successor to the Bold 9000. This new Bold is smaller, lighter and makes use of an optical trackpad instead of a jogball.

Sony Ericsson Naite

Sony Ericsson Naite

By Joseph Hanlon

Sony Ericsson's Naite isn't a heart-starter but let's face it, the reason you'd buy the Naite is for the secret pleasure of knowing your phone is slightly less of a burden on the environment than those wretched iPhones.

Constructed from recycled materials, Good call quality, Can sync with Microsoft Exchange server

Expensive, Average camera, No 3.5mm headphone socket, Basic web browsing

Nokia 6720 classic

Nokia 6720 Classic

By Joseph Hanlon

With so many excellent phones to choose from, Nokia hasn't done nearly enough to make the 6720 desirable. It does the basics well, but struggles to justify its price.

Great call quality, Camera is OK, Stellar battery life

Poorly designed keypad, Boring colours, Uninteresting suite of apps

Nokia 6710 Navigator

Nokia 6710 Navigator

By Joseph Hanlon

Nokia's third Navigator in the series is the best of the bunch thus far, though its small screen will dissuade many from binning their TomToms for in-car use.

Zoom bar is awesome, GPS hardware is powerful, 5-megapixel camera is a stand-out

2.6-inch screen is too small for the task, Boring beige design breaks no new ground

The 6710 puts its shortcomings in the foreground, and if you can live without a large screen to navigate by this latest handset will do the trick nicely. Its excellent camera sweetens the deal, adding an outstanding tool for tourists.

LG GD900 Crystal

LG Crystal GD900

By Joseph Hanlon

We love the clear touchpad, both for its good looks and intuitive gestures, and we think the Crystal makes a good mobile phone. Shame its camera is a stinker.

Funky clear touchpad, Intuitive gesture control, Superb display, Decent battery life

8MP camera takes terrible photos, Web browser and media player could use refinement, No 3.5mm headphone socket on the phone

Nokia E52

Nokia E52

By Frank Lewis

At first sight the Nokia E52 won't set your heart racing, but its excellent battery life and ease of use make it a smartphone worthy of consideration.

Light, slim design, Easy to use, Good suite of business tools, Long battery life

Numeric keypad isn't best for long emails, 3-megapixel camera is a bit shabby

Nokia N86

Nokia N86 8MP

By Joseph Hanlon

There's a lot to like about the N86 8MP, but it's hard to fall in love with it too. While it's well made with good features, it looks and feels like a phone from several years ago.

Solid construction, Great keypad, Good 8MP camera, 8GB storage

2.6-inch screen is small for this price range, Earpiece speaker was muffled during tests

Though it's well designed and solidly built, the N86 is a tough phone to get excited about. Its AU$949 price tag is a bit ritzy for what you get.

Samsung Omnia Icon

Samsung Omnia Icon

By Joseph Hanlon

Its excellent multimedia support, storage and gorgeous display make the Omnia better for people who put pleasure before business.

Nice, familiar design, Excellent multimedia capabilities, Superb, finger-friendly skin of Windows Mobile, All popular connectivity options

On-screen keyboard is a little small, Lag can still be an issue when multitasking

When you weigh up its strengths and weaknesses, the Omnia Icon is better suited to lovers of mobile media than to dedicated business people. It has a capable suite of productivity tools, but people who need excellent messaging will find the on-screen ...

BlackBerry Curve 8520

BlackBerry Curve 8520

By Flora Graham

With the BlackBerry Curve 8520, RIM has done a good job of creating an affordable phone with all the right features, although you might miss 3G connectivity. Just make sure you get it in black.

Flat, responsive trackpad, QWERTY keyboard, Good social-networking apps with more available on the BlackBerry App World, 3.5mm headphone jack, Dedicated music keys, Black version is attractive, Rubber trim

No 3G, No camera flash, Low-end, 2-megapixel camera, Purple version is hideous, No GPS
