Nikon 1 J1 Review

With the announcement of the Nikon 1 series of cameras, Nikon had stepped into a segment of cameras they had not ventured in before, the compact system camera range of cameras. This segment had been dominated by the likes of Olympus, Panasonic and a...

The Nikon 1 J1 is available in India at a street price of 29,050 for the model with the 10-30mm lens. The pink version, which comes with a 10-30mm lens and a 30-110mm lens is available for 40,950 making it a special edition model. The Nikon 1 J1 is...

Nikon 1 J1

In August 2012, Nikon released firmware version 1.20 for the V1 and J1 which among other small changes, claims to improve the cameras' program lines in some exposure modes, to reduce the risk of blurred images due to slow shutter speeds. We have not...

Good image quality (comparable to 12MP Micro Four Thirds sensor output) ; Very good, print-ready JPEGs - nice color reproduction, and a good balance of NR/detail ; Fast and accurate phase-detection tracking AF as part of adaptive 'Hybrid' AF system ;...

Conservative Auto ISO behavior can result in dangerously slow shutter speeds indoors (especially frustrating for social photography and continuous-advance shots of indoor sports) ; No 'live' simulation of exposure compensation, nor on-screen histogram...

The J1 will reward point-and-shoot upgraders with a noticeable bump in image quality, but often fails to deliver acceptable results in lower-light settings when operated in its fully automated mode.

Nikon 1 J1

Compact interchangeable lens cameras like the Sony NEX and Olympus PEN got a big shot in the arm when Ashton Kutcher's company decided to enter the game. The Nikon J1 clearly is targeted to the point-and-shoot crowd, rather than purist photographers...

Nikon’s first mirrorless camera ; Quality images in good light, solid videos ; Digital noise well under control

Photos not as good as competitors ; Limited selection of lenses ; Dated menu system

Although the Nikon 1 J1 has a lot of pluses, we feel the negatives (and the competition) make it difficult to recommend unreservedly. It’s a good, but not great, camera.

Nikon 1 J1 review

Small-bodied interchangeable-lens cameras are the future of photography, and everyone knows it. At their best, they bring DSLR-like control and quality to cameras with much smaller bodies. That's what Sony went for with the NEX-3,...

Good-looking ; Very fast focusing and shooting ; Multiple available lenses

Sensor is more point-and-shoot than DSLR ; Way too expensive ; Terrible low-light image quality

The Nikon J1 is a barely-disguised point-and-shoot with a bunch of lenses and a $650 price tag

Compact, attractive design ; Manual control in video mode ; Built-in flash

Inconsistent performance ; Average image quality ; Expensive

Nikon's first mirrorless camera has a stylish design, but performance misses the mark for pro and other advanced users.

Nikon 1 J1 (with 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses, Red)

Nikon took its time introducing its interchangeable-lens camera system, dubbed the Nikon 1 series, and though I don't agree with a lot of the choices the company made, it clearly put a lot of thought into the cameras before rushing out me-too versions...

The Nikon 1 J1 delivers excellent video and low-ISO photo quality, plus some aspects of the camera's performance lead its class.

The CX lens system drops manual focus rings on the lenses; you can't use flash above 1/60 sec; and there's no option for an EVF.

The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera, but there's nothing here that screams out "buy it" over similar competitors. It's also on the expensive side for a point-and-shoot upgrader, but has drawbacks for the more advanced user.

Nikon Mirrorless J1 Digital Camera Review

The J1 is one of two mirrorless cameras Nikon is debuting in 2011, representing the first entry either of the “Big Two” camera companies have made into a market segment that has become quite crowded in the past three years. The J1 is the junior of the...

The Nikon J1 represents the first step for the company into the rapidly growing compact interchangeable lens camera world. While most of these cameras are designed to fit DSLR quality into a compact size, Nikon seems to be aiming at that goal from the...

Nikon J1

Nikon has entered the mirrorless camera market with a strong start by introducing their new Nikon 1 system, which includes the J1 and V1 cameras.

Compact camera with broad zoom range

Rear LCD is hard to see; no viewfinder

The highlights for my shooting with the J1 include: the broad range of focal lengths offered in a compact camera, the high speed that ensures peak-of-action capture, and the RAW format. Of course, HD video is also a plus. The downside to the J1 is the...

Four cameras that leave smartphones in the dust

For entrepreneurs who rely on having a camera handy (contractors, realtors, landscapers, we're talking to you), the optics embedded in today's smartphones won't cut it. To wit: The 8-megapixel lens in the iPhone 4S falls short of the ultra-crisp...
