Olympus PEN E-P5 Review

The Olympus E-P5 is an outstanding ILC combining Rangefinder styling, top of the line components, outstanding image quality and amazing performance into a compact package. It also features the largest collection of available lenses for an ILC. Read...

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations ; Overall outstanding image quality in all situations ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Full 1080p HD video is excellent quality ; Great image quality ; 5-axis Image...

Classic rangefinder styling is not the most comfortable ; Pop-up flash is not near as powerful as external units ; One of the higher priced ILCs

Olympus PEN E-P5

When Olympus introduced the original Micro Four Thirds PEN E-P1 almost 4 years ago in June 2009, it was the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to adopt a compact, 'rangefinder-style' body that made no pretence to look like an SLR. It also saw...

Beautifully-styled and built, with lots of external controls ; Excellent JPEG output: warm, saturated colours without being excessive ; Classic twin-dial user interface ; Useful and easy to use Wi-Fi ; Reliable metering and white balance ; Extremely...

Unusually prone to blurred/shaken images at certain shutter speeds (around 1/160sec) ; Movie quality rather disappointing ; Camera configuration dauntingly complex ; Lenses with snap manual focus ring don't engage manual focus assist tools ;...

The E-P5 is the most substantial re-working of the original PEN model, and it's the most impressive yet. It produces the same excellent image quality as the E-M5 and has a proper two-dial control system. This, combined with a better touch screen and...

Olympus PEN E-P5 Review

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is the latest in Olympus' Micro Four-Thirds (MFT) interchangeable lens camera lineup. While the E-P5 blends the latest tech into a classic retro body, does the performance match up with its elegant design?

Attractive retro design ; Efficient and intuitive controls ; Good performance ; (Almost) infinitely customizable

Autofocus not as smart as we would have expected ; Myriad features and customization options may be too confusing for some users ; Noise filter aggressively removes detail from JPEG images

The Olympus PEN E-P5 jams the latest camera technologies into a solidly built, elegant retro body.

Olympus PEN E-P5 (with 17mm lens and viewfinder, black)

Normally a two-year product cycle isn't that much for a camera targeted at advanced photographers. But in a field where technology mutates as quickly as it does for advanced interchangeable-lens cameras, that's a long time. So at two years since the...

The Olympus PEN E-P5 renders extremely good photos for its class, and has a streamlined shooting design. Plus, it's fast.

The navigation button/dial is annoyingly awkward, and I wish the flash tilted.

An excellent entry in the Micro Four Thirds universe, the Olympus PEN E-P5 should please a lot of folks, but it's also expensive given that it doesn't deliver best-in-class photo quality.

Olympus PEN E-P5

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is an extremely impressive mirrorless camera, but we prefer its sibling, the Olympus OM-D EM-5.

Compact. In-body stabilization. Fast autofocus. Shoots at 9.7 frames per second. Large native lens library. Articulating rear LCD. Touch input support. Built-in flash. Hot shoe and accessory port. Easy Wi-Fi setup. 1080p video recording. 1/8,000...

Stabilization system is audible. EVF is not built-in. Lacks a standard mic input. Focus peaking and magnification could be better implemented. Wi-Fi could use more features

The Olympus PEN E-P5 ($1,449.99 list with 17mm lens and EVF) is the latest addition to the Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera family, and it's a winner. The PEN features the same imaging engine and stabilization system as our Editors' Choice OM-D E-M5,...

Camera Test: Olympus Pen E-P5

Before Olympus introduced the OM-D line of interchangeable-lens compacts, its Pen series cameras were the flagship Micro Four Thirds bodies. Now, the new 16.1MP Pen E-P5—with its metal chassis, 1/8000-second top shutter speed, tilting LCD, five-axis...

Olympus PEN E-P5

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is a mirror-less compact system camera based on the Micro Four Thirds standard. Announced in May 2013, it's the successor to the E-P3 launched two years previously, which makes it the new flagship in the Olympus PEN series. Note...

2x2 dial exposure control ; 5-axis, 5EV built-in stabilisation ; 1.03 million dot tilting LCD panel ; Optional 2.36 million dot VF4 EVF ; Focus peaking (albeit for still photos only) ; Touch focus for movies ; Intervalometer and time-lapse

No panorama mode ; 99 frame intervalometer limit ; Not weather-sealed ; Flash easy to accidentally pop-up ; Focus peaking doesn't work for movies ; Quite pricey at time of launch

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is a flagship model worthy of the name. It does exactly what manufacturers and retailers expect of a premium product - makes you yearn for it, regardless of whether you need or can afford it. It offers a truly compelling range of...

Olympus PEN E-P5

Can the new flagship PEN surpass the mighty OM-D, or is it just another pretender to the throne?

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is an excellent camera, and in the aggregate it's probably just as capable as the company's reigning flagship—particularly once you factor in the optional VF-4 finder. But why should you pick it over the identically priced OM-D?
