Sony NEX-5: Finally, A Giant Leap!

Point and shoot cameras are preferred by most of us because they are cheap and easy to use. Every one of us would like to own a DSLR camera but the learning curve is a deterrent. Companies such as Olympus and Panasonic tried to bring the best of both...

After seeing so many cameras come out through the years, each with tiny improvements over the last, it hasn’t been the most exciting of times in the point-and-shoot camera segment. We’re happy to report that the NEX-5 is one of the most exciting...

Sony NEX-5R review: can the best mirrorless camera get even better?

Earlier this year, I made a pretty drastic change in my camera set up. I left behind my trusty Canon DSLR, and the lenses and accessories that had served me well for six years, and I picked up a Sony NEX-5N mirrorless camera. My reason for making the...

Great low-light performance ; Excellent video capture ; Improved handling over previous generation

Small lens selection ; No viewfinder ; Controls are still limited

Sony's improvements to the NEX-5R make it an even better value than it was before

Sony Alpha NEX-5R (with 18-55mm lens, Silver)

Setting its sights on a "new" set of photographers -- people who want to replace their low-end dSLRs with something a lot more compact -- Sony's evolved the midrange Alpha NEX-5N into the more control-friendly and connected NEX-5R. With a new sensor...

Sony Alpha NEX-5R delivers excellent photo quality, even in dimmer light, and provides more physical controls than some of its predecessors for a more streamlined shooting design.

The wireless connectivity and apps "ecosystem" implementations are far less than this camera deserves.

It's a great camera choice for high-quality stills and a streamlined shooting design under $800, but the Sony Alpha NEX-5R falls short when it comes to sharing your shots online.

Sony Alpha NEX-5R

Sony's NEX camera series has grown from two models to four, and the new Alpha NEX-5R ($749.99 direct with 18-55mm lens) now occupies a difficult position in the lineup. It costs $150 more than our Editors' Choice entry-level compact interchangeable...

Tilting, touch-screen LCD. Optional EVF available. Built-in Wi-Fi. Great high ISO performance. 9fps burst shooting

No built-in flash. So-so kit lens. No hot shoe. No dedicated battery charger. Some camera apps cost money

The Sony Alpha NEX-5R is a small interchangeable-lens camera built around a big, excellent image sensor, but it's a tough sell when you consider the rest of Sony's NEX lineup, including our Editors' Choice, the less-expensive Alpha NEX-F3.

Drastically improved focusing performance ; Excellent image quality and battery life ; 10 frames-per-second stills ; 180-degree rotatable LCD

No microphone input ; WiFi app issues at launch

Sony's third-generation NEX-5 delivers excellent performance for a manageable price.

Sony Alpha NEX-5NDigital Camera Review

The Sony NEX-5N is the update to one of Sony's first NEX cameras, the NEX-5. At first glance the camera does not seem much different from its predecessor, but (figuratively) look under the hood and you'll realize the NEX-5N is a different beast...

Put the Sony NEX-5N and its predecessor, the NEX-5, next to each other and you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Like a “spot the difference” comic in the newspaper, the NEX-5N’s aesthetic changes are few and far between. Once you see the shots...

Sony Alpha NEX-5NFirst Impressions Review

The Sony NEX-5N is the midrange model of Sony's 2011 NEX lineup, with an overall design similar to 2010's NEX-5 but with a number of smart additions that streamline operation. The most notable addition is the touchscreen interface, which adds an extra...

Regardless of how you feel about the practicality of the NEX system, and the idea of designing a compact system camera that, with lens in tow, doesn’t fit in your pocket, the NEX-5N is a significant advancement towards fleshing out what this system is...

Sony NEX-5

Sony Alpha NEX-5

The Sony Alpha NEX-5, which brings together features from both point-and-shoots and DSLRs, embodies the out-of-the-box thinking that gadgeteers often admire about Sony. Its high-performance features--including a 14.6-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, a...

Solid image quality ; Accepts both SD/SDHC and Memory Stick cards ; Innovative modes, including Sweep Panorama ; HD movie recording with stereo audio ; Compact design with DSLR capabilities ; Excellent burst mode

No built-in flash ; Proprietary accessory mount and new lens mount

Sony's first interchangeable-lens compact camera, the NEX-5 offers image and video quality on a par with a DSLR and has unique modes that go beyond anything else in its class. The only thing missing is a built-in flash.

Sony NEX-5 Digital Camera Review

The Alpha NEX-5 looks like the combination of an SLR lens and a point and shoot camera, and handles like one too, with many of the advantages of an SLR without the bulk. We found that the performance of the camera was disappointing, though, with...

The NEX-5 looks like some kind of evil experiment where a mad scientist grafted an SLR lens onto a point and shoot camera. We won't speculate on if Sony cackled evilly as they created it, but the result is an interesting camera that is the smallest...
