Sony Alpha NEX-5NFirst Impressions Review

The Sony NEX-5N is the midrange model of Sony's 2011 NEX lineup, with an overall design similar to 2010's NEX-5 but with a number of smart additions that streamline operation. The most notable addition is the touchscreen interface, which adds an extra...

Regardless of how you feel about the practicality of the NEX system, and the idea of designing a compact system camera that, with lens in tow, doesn’t fit in your pocket, the NEX-5N is a significant advancement towards fleshing out what this system is...

Sony Alpha NEX-5N

The Sony Alpha NEX-5N is the fourth model in Sony's NEX line of APS-C format mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Just as the NEX-C3 replaces the NEX-3, the 5N is a direct replacement for its predecessor the NEX-5, using the company's latest 16.1MP...

Very good JPEG output quality ; Very good build quality ; Support for excellent OLED EVF module ; Support for SLT Alpha mount lenses through the optional LA-EA2 adapter ; Easy to use but versatile iAuto mode ; Wider range of ISO sensitivity settings...

Operation is very different in photo creativity modes compared to PASM modes - may be confusing for ambitious novices ; No external microphone input (Sony does offer an optional screw on mic that plugs into the accessory port) ; Touchscreen offers...

The NEX-5N is great little camera with big camera image quality. If you are looking to transition into enthusiast photography and want DSLR image quality in a small size, the 5N is definitely worth a look.

Sony Alpha NEX-5N (with 18-55mm lens, Silver)

Slipping into Sony's compact Alpha interchangeable-lens camera line between the not-much-cheaper NEX-C3 and seriously equipped but substantially more expensive NEX-7, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N's solid quality, performance, and features offer surprisingly...

A small-bodied interchangeable-lens model with excellent video, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N also offers some nice features, including a tilting LCD, EVF port, and a hybrid touch-screen/traditional interface.

The user interface won't be to everyone's taste, and the body feels almost too small for the typical E-mount zoom lenses.

An especially good option for people who want a relatively inexpensive ILC for shooting video, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N's photo quality's about the same as its cheaper sibling's.

Sony NEX-5N Preview

Sony's new NEX-5N builds upon the NEX-5 released last year; however it does not technically replace it. The NEX-5N boasts some new upgrades, along with a redesigned exterior; although the camera still looks very similar to the NEX-5.

Sony Alpha NEX-5NDigital Camera Review

What follows is a quick overview of the video capabilities of the Sony Alpha NEX-5N. Read our comprehensive analysis and testing results in greater detail at

There’s no question about it, the Sony NEX-5N offers much more for the video enthusiast than Sony’s previous NEX-5. The camera did a much better job than its predecessor in our video motion test, and the fact that the NEX-5N can shoot HD video with...

Sony Alpha NEX-5N

Sony's thin and light NEX-5N has the same basic form as its predecessor, but sports a new 16.1-megapixel sensor that's capable of capturing up to 10 frames per second and Full HD video at 60p. A new touchscreen adds a few new functions, and the NEX-5N...

Fast autofocus and prefocused shutter lag; Quieter shutter sound; Captures 10 frames per second; Supports AVCHD 2.0

Limited first-party lens selection; Slow and confusing on-screen user interface; top-mounted, proprietary accessories are quite pricey

When the original NEX-5 digital camera debuted a little over 18 months ago, it was something of a landmark--not only for Sony, but for the compact system camera market as a whole. Its aggressively-styled body was compact even compared to CSCs that used...

Alpha NEX-5N

, though firmware upgrades addressed some of the issues I raised

Very good photo quality; low noise through ISO 1600 in low light, ISO 3200 in good light ; Compact body (until you attach a lens) ; Articulating 3-inch LCD display with 921k pixels, good outdoor/low light visibility; limited (but still useful) touch...

Tends to underexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 stop ; Redeye a problem, no removal tool available ; Menu-driven user interface still needs work, even with addition of custom button ; Design annoyances: camera's size advantage lost when a lens is attached; LCD's...

All things considered, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N is a very good interchangeable lens camera -- as long as you can tolerate its menu-driven user interface. If you find that you can live with its interface, then you'll find a camera that's capable of taking...

Toma Sony NEX-5n Half Case and Wrist Strap Review

In response to my Gariz Sony NEX-5n Half-Case Review, the folks at LoveCases, a British tech-accessory website, offered to send me the Toma half-case and matching wrist strap to review. Like the Gariz case, the Toma half-case is a form fitted leather...

Good materials and craftsmanship ; Form fitted for the NEX-5n ; Allows access to all camera functions ; Adds better grip-ability ; Does not add too much weight or bulk ; Relatively inexpensive

Have to remove the case to access/recharge the battery/SD card

The Toma half-case and matching wrist strap for the NEX-5n are definitely worth considering for your Sony MILC. Both add a bit of protection and style at a relatively moderate price. If you do not want to shell out several times the money for Gariz...

Sony NEX-5N

An upgrade to the NEX-5, the 5N continues Sony's mirrorless line with a newer 16 megapixel sensor. As with all the NEX's, reviews have been very positive. That sensor is really quite good in low light and, as with all Sonys with CMOS sensors, the...

Sony NEX-5N

The Sony NEX-5N may not look much different than its predecessor, the NEX-5, but it comes loaded with a brand new image sensor and processor, which gives the camera a huge boost in video performance and capability.
