Champions Online (PC)

It is hard to imagine that the industry once believed superhero games were somehow cursed. If curses do exist -- and they most assuredly do not -- then the curse upon superhero games is long gone, on vacation on some tropical island with its wife...

This review is based on a final build of the PC game provided by the publisher.

Champions Online is one of the best MMO releases in years that will wow you with its character creator

Champions makes sure you're having fun right out of the gate rather than having to struggle for two months through boredom to level up your character. It's a solid MMO that will serve as a good diversion from WoW, but only time will tell if it has the...

Muscle, speed, spandex… but endurance?

Best character creation in any MMO; fast and often tactical twitch-based combat; enjoyable, albeit barebones PvP; did I mention character creation

Just enough missions and zones to get by; convoluted crafting; little potential for a tight-knit community

Champions Online doesn't inspire the drive to explore or build a community, but it thrives on the spontaneity of twitch-based combat and the thrill of experimenting with new powers. The Nemesis system, which lets you create an arch-enemy to battle, and...

Super mediocre.

Very detail-oriented character generation process

The rest of the game feels like a checklist MMO that's severely lacking in meaningful content

A little over 5 years ago, developer Cryptic Studios won my praise and admiration when they took a chance in the Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMMOG) market. City of Heroes allowed players to walk a new and different role playing path as they...

Great character builder, power customization removes restrictions on building YOUR hero, ways of acquiring quests keeps things interesting, pretty colors

Lack luster PvP, power customization actually discourages grouping, some portions of the game are confusing for new players

But in a game of nearly infinite choices, not all of them are created equal. After completing the tutorial, players get to pick from a variety of travel powers. But if you choose to web-sling while your buddy flies, you'll have a hard time getting...

This hero-themed online game is light on content, but at least it has enough superpowered hijinks to last you the free month.

Extremely flexible hero customization ; Fun, action-packed combat keeps you busy ; Attractive, vibrant art style ; The nemesis system is a great idea

Not enough missions and only five regions ; Flexibility can lead to imbalanced characters that aren't much fun to play ; A number of underdeveloped features

Need a hero? Just wave a quest icon and they'll all come running

Tons of action and silliness ; Very different from City of Heroes ; You're awesome from level 1

First few hours are miserable ; Fiddly interface ; Very little high-level content for now

Champions Online is an unusual game. It’s quite broken in many ways, but it quickly grows on you, and becomes surprisingly endearing. It doesn’t always make itself easy to like, and it’ll die on the vine unless it gets more areas to quest in and...

Cryptic's super-powered MMO comes out strong but still has plenty of room to grow.

While it's still far too early to render a verdict on the game's long term potential, Champions Online has definitely won us over on the strength of a few key features. The combat is fun, the settings are varied and there's lots of content to explore....

From zero to hero.

Everyone has a favourite superhero, whether you’re a comic geek or not. Only those utterly bereft of imagination will baulk at the idea, but surely no one can resist debating which would be the best superpower to possess. Flight, invisibility, super...
