Legend of Grimrock

The Good: Almost Human studios strives to recreate the dungeon crawling RPGs of yore The Bad: And succeeds The Ugly: Perhaps too well. I am likely very close to the demographic that Finnish studio Almost Human had in mind when they created Legend of...

The game is chock full of environmental puzzles. They start with pulling levers and chains to open doors, triggering pressure plates in the floors, and putting gems into eye sockets of statues, but very quickly advance to some real brain benders. This...

One thing your reviewer here today never thought he'd ever be doing again is playing a flick-screen role-playing game, and even more perplexing is the fact he'd be enjoying it too. Only to an extent, but enjoying it nonetheless. Deader than those...

Finding a blue resurrection crystal after coming out of a battle with 6 giant spiders with only one poisoned wizard left in the party.

Legend of Grimrock is a faithful return to old-school, hardcore role playing.

Great revival of old-school RPG style ; Mind-bendingly clever puzzles ; Intense combat ; Surprising twists to the storyline keep you interested

Can be frustratingly difficult ; Staid sounds and visuals

To the game's great credit, these runes are logically connected to specific concepts (there's one that signifies "fiery" things, one that signifies "projectile," and so on), so you can experiment on your own, although the game does provide you with...

Almost Human's shiny new take on hardcore old-school dungeon crawlers is a warm fuzzy trip down memory lane and a lot more.

Underneath its gorgeous sheen and striking atmosphere, Legend of Grimrock is an unapologetic nod to PC gaming's earlier days. Playing it reawakens those same feelings of excitement I had back when I got into early dungeon crawler RPGs for the first...

An authentic and fun re-creation of dungeon-crawlers past, right down to the puzzles and traps.

Captures everything that's fun about old-school RPGs; some fantastic puzzles; atmosphere is great at generating tension

Captures everything that's not fun about old-school RPGs; limited resources may frustrate some; can't craft potions with spells

Looks like they do make'em like they used to after all! Now that Grimrock is a big success, I look forward to the sequel: Legend of Fraggle Rock.

Legend of Grimrock Review

I have always loved role playing games ever since I was a young kid sitting in front of my old PC reading the walls of text that comprised my favorite MUD. There's been an evolution of sorts...

Old school RPG game play ; Simple concept, complex strategies ; Beautiful visuals

Easy to exploit combat at times ; May be a little difficult for some players

Legend of Grimrock has an old school framework.

These are fairly minor nitpicks, though, especially since Legend of Grimrock is not a combat-focused game, and even its combat is more puzzle-like than anything else. The focus is on atmosphere and brain-teasers, both of which the game pulls off with...

Vintage dungeon-running with a thoroughly modern atmosphere and a heart of darkness.

A quiet, moody triumph. It's not for the impatient or easily-distracted, but it's for exactly that reason that Legend of Grimrock is such a substantial and atmospheric slice of thoughtful dungeoneering.

Naked and only a pointed stick to defend myself against a giant snail... ahh the eighties!

Overall the game is a good trip down memory lane. There is the hint of more downloadable content in the future, and its reasonable price on Steam (US$15) makes it a good little game to add to your collection for when you feel like something different.
