Lone Survivor Review

A gripping narrative and an irresistible atmosphere of spine-tingling dread make Lone Survivor a compelling horror experience.

Pervasively creepy tone ; Fantastic sound design and music ; Multiple endings and branching pathways ; Oppressive 2D visuals draw you in ; Involving storyline and deep characterization

Confusing mapping system ; Terrible chase sequences

Fortunately, a series of mirrors placed throughout the gameworld let you teleport to and from your home base instantaneously (and also serve to give you a sense of your overall health and sanity). Unfortunately, the game's mapping system leaves a great...

A short but emotionally charged adventure in survival horror.

Powerful music and sound design; psychological horror gets under your skin; an amazing story arc from end to end

Trial-and-error may frustrate; map is unnecessarily difficult to navigate; lack of direction can lead to occasional dead ends

More Silent Hill than Silent Hill, Jasper Byrne's Lone Survivor shows survival horror's best and brightest exactly how it's done.

Lone Survivor deserves to be massive, because it might just be the most interesting thing I've played all year.

Amazingly atmospheric ; Hard, bleak and unsettling ; Well paced and brimming with ideas

Very occasional enemy AI bugs

You can buy Lone Survivor from its website for $10.

It's one of the freshest, boldest and most rewarding entrants in a genre many had left for dead, and anyone pining for a true Silent Hill experience needs to experience what Byrne has to offer. Lone Survivor deserves to be massive, because it might...

Lone Survivor [...] made me feel a lot of things. Frustration, rage, stress, exhaustion, fear, joy, hope, pride, sadness, wonder. Four hours and twenty-six minutes - plus some trial-and-error-based change. But this game's going to stick with me much,...
