Oil Rush Review

Complicating real-time strategy by way of oversimplification.

Fantastic water and weather effects; a variety of units to tinker with, an efficient minimap

Simplified" controls are cumbersome; campaign grows tedious, minimap dominates attention

The Steam blurb for Oil Rush says it "combines strategic challenge of classic RTS with sheer fun of Tower Defense." But as far as I can tell there's nothing more Tower Defenseish about Oil Rush than any other RTS in which you build defensive towers --...

The novel charm of Oil Rush is often marred by its strategic limitations.

Interesting blend of real-time strategy and tower defense ; Art design creates an engrossing setting ; Plenty of variety in multiplayer maps

Uneven strategic gameplay ; Some boring missions ; One dreadful escort scenario

Oil Rush offers a lighter style of strategy gameplay. But does it automate too much of the experience?

Oil Rush offers a lighter style of strategy gameplay. It automates a large percentage of combat and production, challenging you to instead built turrets and manage fleet movement to capture and defend territory. The simple unit relationships and...

Late last year, Anno 2070 tried to explore the post-apocalyptic setting of an Earth flooded by drastically risen sea levels, where Kevin Costner would have to drink his own filtered pee. If you just wanted a new Anno game with shinier graphics and a...

What could have been a messy title merely created to showcase the Unigine Engine has turned out to be a surprisingly polished and deep strategy game. Oil Rush isn't just a joy to behold in action, but manages to make an old genre feel fresh while...

Oil Rush review

This ingenious push'n'pull battle is Waterworld: the strategy game, but mercifully Costner-free.

Oil Rush is a smart and tight fusion of two very different types of strategy game - but despite all the sturm und drang of its Waterworld-esque conflicts it might just work better as a lo-fi matter of pushing shapes around a full-screen map.

Oil is important because it powers your platforms and abilities. While you may continue to spawn units (the platforms do this automatically until they hit their limit; it's similar to the creation of AI creeps in multiplayer online battle arena games...

Oil Rush- PC

In some ways it feels like a concept that was bundled up and shoved inside a game before it had been entirely fleshed out, while in other ways it seems like a focused, even cocky exploration of how far its relatively simple mechanics can be taken.

I could easily see this becoming a fantastic board game -- heck, the graphics don't even seem necessary -- but until you see it in a cardboard-and-plastic format, Oil Rush is only fit for chum.

The fusion of real-time strategy gameplay with elements traditionally associated with tower defense make Oil Rush an original game, but unfortunately it doesn't mold its novel concept into a consistently enjoyable experience. An uneven level of...

The simple unit relationships and straightforward mechanics can be fun, though some of the gameplay elements beyond your control hinder the experience more than they should. The flawed story mode can be safely passed by, but if you're able to find an...
