Risen 2: Dark Waters (PC)

Peg legs. Eye patches. Parrots. Rum. Think "pirate," and these images spring immediately to mind. Risen 2: Dark Waters features all these tropes and more, yet this pirate-themed role-playing game handles its inspiration with care. There are some...

Array of quests that make you feel like a true adventurer ; Voodoo and dirty tricks spice up battles ; Great island atmosphere ; Fun attitude that doesn't rely on tired pirate cliches

Frustrating combat scenarios ; Some annoying bugs ; Not as free-form as the original Risen

Risen 2: Dark Waters

Risen 2: Dark Waters is a disappointment. Trust me, you have no idea how hard it is to type that sentence. You see, since I first discovered Gothic some ten years ago, I've been enthralled by everything developer Piranha Bytes makes. They are masters...

Thus, even up to the end of the game, there are only three spells (four if you count the ghost). What a colossal rip off. Crushingly, this trend continues to virtually every part of the game. Potions are never really needed or helpful because free...

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

A grand high-seas adventure it may be, but Risen 2 needs more monkey.

Gorgeous environments; entertaining storyline; a treasure's chest of pirating skills and dirty tricks to learn

Make wrong choices early on and you may handicap your progression; weak combat; curious design decisions

So I can't play as the pirate with the heart of gold, eh? Ah well, I always like to play through RPGs as the jerk anyway, so this works out just fine for me. What about you? Do you lean toward to good or evil side in your roleplaying?

Evocative tropical atmosphere and gleeful adventuring help Risen 2 navigate the turbulent waters of its problematic combat and scattered glitches.

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

I do wonder if that ‘2' in the title is meant to be said as ‘to', like in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. So, “Risen To Dark Waters”. Sounds cool either way, but it still doesn't change the fact that Risen isn't the most highly regarded RPG around –...

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

Serious pirate-themed games only come once every few years or so. Sometimes the gimmicks the theme brings are welcome additions, and other times games feel bogged down with half-baked swashbuckling gags and silliness. Luckily, Risen 2: Dark Waters is...

It turns out that if you throw enough pirate gags at the player, you still can't really cover up a stiff and busted combat system that's been holding you back for nearly a decade. What's new with the pirate theme is often original and off-beat, and...

Risen 2: Dark Waters

The original Risen was a curious little beast. In a genre so used to empowering the player, letting one live out heroic fantasies in a world full of treasure, choice, and magnificent deeds, Risen was quite prepared to strip you of your dignity, kick...

That deserves a modest round of applause, at the very least.

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

Piranha Bytes makes its signature style of role-playing more digestible, though thins out too much of the series' fascinating density.

With Risen 2 Piranha Bytes continues to demonstrate skill at crafting big, believable worlds. Dark Waters is at times beautiful, offering a finely detailed set of islands to explore on your quest to become a notorious pirate captain and vanquish an...

Risen 2 Feature: Sailing New Seas

Ships, parrots, monkeys, and more: there's a lot fresh and new in Piranha Byte's pirate RPG.

For North American CRPG fans, Europe has been a godsend for quite some time now in delivering titles that proudly adhere to traditions while also accommodating all the strides gaming has made in recent years in terms of technical prowress and...

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

I have always wanted to be a pirate; have my own ship and sail the seven seas, gathering treasure and booty while getting drunk out of my mind on rum. My dreams have come true after...

Nice customization ; Fun pirate theme ; Good story and voice acting ; Pretty visuals ; Streamlined menus

Sluggish combat ; Some skills are a little pointless ; Maybe too difficult for casual players
