Sleeping Dogs (Xbox 360) Review

Don't miss out on one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2012.

There is Grand Theft Auto and then there is everything else. Sure, Assassin's Creed and inFAMOUS do traversal better and Saint's Row has more varied missions, but no one excels at world building in the way Rockstar does. From the breakthrough hit of...

Between its fantastic combat, shooting, presentation, storytelling, and RPG elements, Sleeping Dogs has just raised the demands for what it'd take for GTAV to get the throne back. Good luck, Rockstar.

Why don't you have a pork bun in your hand?!

Appreciate the Cantonese (and the swearing); Decent cast of characters; Solid melee combat, adequate gunplay; Visually impressive open world of Hong Kong; Plenty of side tasks and missions; Social Hub, including mission replay

but the transitions into English are awkward; ...despite lack of character depth; No difficulty setting; Few game-freezing glitches

On a purely personal gripe, I despise the game's attempt to dumb down Hong Kong mahjong into its variation of mahjong poker, which is essentially Yahtzee and as far as I'm concerned should have been played with mahjong dice instead of tiles anyway. If...

Good fighting, driving, and freerunning; well-told and acted story; broad mission variety

Consequence-free murder doesn't fit the character; city's not very explorable; annoying camera

I dunno about that title, except that they missed a massive opportunity to have Snoop Dogg do a cameo taking a nap on a couch. Anyway, what's the most important part about an open-world game for you? Driving? Combat? Story? Or interactive toilets?

Sleeping Dogs Review: Foreign Cinema

Developer United Front Games brings slightly more polish to the open-world crime drama.

Step away after a few hours of playing the Hong Kong action-thriller Sleeping Dogs, and you start to realize a few things. First, that developer United Front Games understands the importance of a world filled with detail that doesn't overburden the...

The artist formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong does GTA in the Far East.

A confident and good-looking open-world action game in a novel setting, but unless you've steered clear of similar games for years, Sleeping Dogs can feel a bit been there, done that, killed all those thugs before.

Sleeping Dogs Review

We don’t know how much of what is now Sleeping Dogs (it began life as True Crime: Hong Kong) was handed over to Square Enix, and perhaps we never will, but it would have been criminal for a game of this calibre to slip between the cracks. It is the...

Excellent script and voice acting; Hong Kong is wonderfully realised and full of detail; Deep fighting system that connects with all other systems; Smooth and responsive driving model; Multi-layered missions that play to the game’s strengths

Apart from the fighting system it doesn’t have much that is unique; The camera sometimes fails to catch up with the action; More interior locations around the city would have been nice; Animations and facial movements are a bit stiff

Sleeping Dogs review: One of the best open world games of recent years

Most open world games see you playing the role of either the cop or the criminal.

Entertaining story ; Being good AND bad ; Rewarding upgrade system

Twitchy vehicle handling ; Lack of technical polish ; Some lame filler missions

Sleeping Dogs may not offer anything particularly new and certainly nothing groundbreaking, but what it does do is deliver sharp, thrilling and just downright enjoyable action to savour.

Varied and violent ; Fantastic missions

Technologically shaky ; Generic, by definition

Sleeping Dogs may not offer anything particularly new and certainly nothing groundbreaking, but what it does do is deliver sharp, thrilling and just downright enjoyable action to savour. Other open-worlders have tried to veer from Rockstar's path, some...
