Spec Ops: The Line Review: An Earnest Take on the Depravity of Man

An anti-war experience in the guise of an action game.

On paper, it almost seemsblasphemous to make an action game based onJoseph Conrad's Heart of Darknessand Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.The two works are seminal commentaries on how war doesn't createvictors, but rather bastard children who are...

SpecOps: The Line- PC

I love the smell of white phosphorus in the morning.” Not really; that would make me a homicidal maniac. But the farther I progressed through developer Yager's long-awaited shooter SpecOps: The Line, the more parallels I uncovered between this game and...

I’m a simple gamer, and I like simple games. So the idea of killing almost everything that moves should be welcome to me. But sometimes I want a little chocolate with my vanilla, and SpecOps: The Line doesn’t give it to me often enough. I like the...

Spec Ops: The Line Review

Heart of Darkness meets Call of Duty.

Conrad inspiring Konrad; Strong narrative; Multiple endings; Choice? In war?; Late-game visuals and set pieces; Competent mechanics and multiplayer

Difficulty spikes; Monotonous environments; Little bits of absurdity

The gamer in me hated much of Spec Ops: The Line. The critic in me loves it. Like anyone else of two minds, I'm forced to decide which side of the line I stand on.

Spec Ops: The Line

After all the door kicking, screaming, blindfire, grenade tossing, and turret handling, a soldier always walks away from battle alive with a strong moral compass intact. This last detail is the most disparate departure from reality that modern military...

We don’t need to come to terms with killing people, because it’s all fun and games for us. Not so for Captain Walker, who must find reason and purpose in his rampage. Walking that long sandy, bloody road through Dubai is one of the most captivating...

Spec Ops: The Line PC Preview

In war our decisions have consequences; and make no mistake, Captain. This is war."

The developers want to stress dearly how choice will be a huge aspect of the game and even not making a decision is in fact a decision in and of itself. If Walker had decided not to open fire, a whole new situation could have taken place

Spec Ops: The Line review

A total downer - and also the best thing to happen to shooters this year

Superficially, Spec Ops: The Line might not be the gold-standard of action games, but it's the bold, thoughtful tone and disconcerting setting that makes it such a welcome relief from all the meatheaded heroics which flood the shelves.

Spec Ops: The Line Review

All of the aforementioned is a welcome addition to both fans of the genre and those new to it. With a shift away from clear-cut good and bad, Spec Ops challenges the sympathetic grey-matter with highlighted gaps between ‘killing machine’ and...

Deep and engaging story line; Great setting; Tactical combat situations; Dynamic controls

Grenade mechanic; Melee combat can get a bit messy; Loading each intro scene upon restarting a checkpoint

Spec Ops: The Line

Yager should be admired for its bravery and effort in building something different, but Spec Ops just doesn't have the fundamentals to back up its grand ideas.

Arresting setting ; Interesting, often alarming story

Infinite turret sections ; Poor AI

Yager should be admired for its bravery and effort in building something different - this could so easily have been an entirely generic shooter - but it just doesn't have the fundamentals to back up its grand ideas or the confidence to go completely...
