Stronghold 3 (PC)

Noted poet Thomas Earl Petty once told us that the waiting is the hardest part, a lesson that is painfully taught once again in Stronghold 3. The Firefly Studios game of medieval micromanagement may have been a long time coming, since Stronghold 2 was...

You may play a feudal lord in Stronghold 3, but the tedious micromanagement and bugs make you feel like a peasant.

Atmospheric music ; Patches are gradually stomping bugs and adding in needed game features

Slow-paced, repetitive scenarios ; Terrible tutorial leaves many key game concepts unexplained ; Buggy and prone to crashes ; Shallow combat and sieges

Even when Stronghold 3 runs properly, it doesn't run well. The first problem you encounter is the lack of a thorough tutorial. While there is an interactive tutorial, it stops abruptly after just a few minutes, leaving virtually all of the game's core...

Truth be told, I have played some real-time strategy games in my day, and I have never been very good at them, especially when it came to multiplayer. Although I was never any good at them, it never stops...

Tons of modes ; Main story campaigns are interesting ; There’s something here for everyone

Weak tutorial ; Control issues at times ; AI leaves something to be desired ; Difficult for beginners

Truth be told, I have played some real-time strategy games in my day, and I have never been very good at them, especially when it came to multiplayer. Although I was never any good at them, it never stops me from giving them the good old college try....

Stronghold 3

2001's Stronghold was a very good, and very European game. Finally you could build up an entire castle from the ground up, man the walls with your units, and manage the feudal economy to support all of it. It was the kind of game they go nuts over in...

Buried beneath bugs, control issues, harsh mission design and even harsher economic balancing, there seems to be a shadow of the old Stronghold as we remember it; sometimes you'll even have a minute of fun here and there. Perhaps we remember the...

Even with the ongoing work, the game remains afflicted by some serious bugs, a dawdling pace, and a tutorial that does virtually nothing to teach the ins and outs of building a medieval village. At present, it is pretty tough to recommend this trip...

The economic campaign doesn't offer what should be Stronghold 3's highlight: epic sieges against grand fortifications. The Historical Siege mode attempts this, but with no way to call in back-up, every unfair loss frustrates.

To release it in this sorry state, to charge £30 for a fundamentally broken game and a few promises, is frankly insulting to their fanbase. In short, don't be fooled by Stronghold's charm, and remember what it did to Cinderella.

Stronghold 3 assumes too much of the user initially, and doesn't do enough to keep the village-building fresh and interesting. Bugs and instability plague the user and combat is still a bit of a mess. Deep down in Stronghold 3 is a solid, balanced...
