Symphony

Symphony is an arcade style shooting game, similar to Galaga. Players control a ship, fire upon enemies and stay alive by not getting hit. Pretty basic stuff. The twist here is the levels are all designed around music – specifically your music.

Excellent and fun arcade shooter ; Use of music (rhythm, tempo) to create waves of enemies ; Different songs really do create different types of levels ; Plenty of weapons to unlock and upgrade

Some logistical "front end" technical issues (such as volume control) ; Should use the in-game included songs as tutorial levels while the game searches through the computer for more songs

Despite some initial issues, Symphony is fun to play. It provides an excellent twist on the arcade shooter genre.

An enjoyable toy of sorts that provides a new way to listen to your music library.

Given its rather simplistic gameplay concept, Symphony manages to be a surprisingly addictive little game. The rewards system whereby you unlock new and unique weapons and abilities each time you beat a level is great “carrot-on-a-stick” to keep you...

Symphony is an exciting mouse-controlled shooter that delivers a dynamic way to enjoy your favorite music.

Levels design themselves around individual songs ; Random nature of upgrade system provides some suspense ; Six difficulty levels to cater to any skill level ; Leaderboards for individual songs

Sometimes hard to see enemy attacks in the confusion ; Categorization of upgrades isn't very intuitive ; Some lag issues

There is a malevolent demon in your music collection... can you battle your own beats to defeat it?

Symphony is a good game, however the longevity of the title will really come down to the depth of your playlist. You can go get Symphony from gog.com for $9.95USD (about $12.50).

For all that, though, Symphony is both fun and often addictive, particularly when you experience the wide range of scenarios presented by a massive music library. When it's not bogged down by brief spurts of lag, the mouse-based combat is responsive...
