Tera

MMOs come and go. Some stick around and go free-to-play (such as Everquest II), some begin as free-to-play intentionally and can be pretty fun (Spirit Tales), while others still just drop off the face of the Earth (such Conan and Aion come to mind)....

I enjoyed my time with Tera and it did leave me wanting to play more. If you can get past the occasional lag and easy starting area, it's a nice alternative to WoW. Whether or not it'll survive against WoW remains to be seen, but I think Tera will...

TERA

Combat in MMOs sucks. Really, it does. You run over to the general vicinity of the creature you wish to smite with your Axe of Righteousness, Raging Fireball or Hammer of Doom, hit the tab key, and then proceed to methodically tap other keys,...

If simply taken as the sum of its parts, TERA might not seem all that impressive. But considering just how excellent its combat is and just how gorgeous everything in-game looks, it’s impossible to dismiss the game as just another run-of-the-mill MMO....

TERA Review: The Burden of Potential

Innovative combat helps elevate this otherwise by-the-numbers MMORPG.

Remember the first episode of Futurama? Disgruntled pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry stumbles his way into cryo-stasis, thaws out 1,000 years later, and wakes up in a world where man has colonized the stars, wisecracking robots chug beer for fuel, and...

Tera's an action-MMO that nails the “action” part and then manages a face-palm-inducing face-plant on the other bits.

Tera's an action-MMO that nails the “action” part and then manages a face-palm-inducing face-plant on all the other bits. Combat moves quickly and feels great, but dirt-dull quests, a generic, disjointed story, repetition, repetition, and repetition...

TERA firma? Not quite.

Action-packed crosshair-based combat system; breathtaking, extensive world; battles against "big ass monsters"; plenty of dungeons

Dull quests; slow buildup to best parts; lack of "fluff"; appeal wears off; questionable staying power

So TERA gets combat and graphics right, but not much else. Considering it's a subscription-based game, it raises the question: how long does an MMO have to keep you playing before you consider it gaming time and money well-spent?

Tired of standing around spamming buttons? TERA's what the doctor ordered.

Great combat system; Varied and entertaining selection of classes; …especially the Warrior!; Political system adds some flavor to end-game; Consistent level of graphical quality with some truly great moments

Takes several frustrating steps backward in MMO quality-of-life; Controls make it difficult to use any UI interface during combat

I didn’t expect that much from Tera going into it, but I came out pleasantly surprised. What the game does well it does very well, the action combat system being the foremost example of that. There’s no shortage of small missteps that interfered with...

TERA Review

Tera's fun combat has an immediacy that keeps you hooked for a good long while in spite of the game's bland questing.

Terrific combat that connects you to the onscreen action ; Exciting encounters against big monsters ; Great instanced dungeons ; Diverse, attractive world invites you to explore it

Bland, generic questing ; No player-versus-player battlegrounds ; Boring early hours

Considering the blandness of the quests, Tera keeps you involved in the proceedings. Of course, much of this has to do with the combat. But the world design can take much of that credit. Granted, there's a certain inconsistency to the Tera universe....

Tera is a strange game. Despite being released in North American and European territories earlier this month, the game is actually a year old

Is there any room for yet another fantasy MMO? Find out in our full review.

Gorgeous visuals ; Exciting engaging combat ; User friendly additions

All the women are kind of slutty ; Quest structure is dated ; Thin characters and story

At last, World of Warcraft meets its match.

I almost hesitate to lavish so much praise on TERA. Given how much it has stolen from World of Warcraft, TERA is standing on the shoulders of a very tall, very strong giant. But the bottom line is that TERA fixes the very worst aspect of WoW—the lame...
