The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth (PC)

Gandalf didn't "die" in Moria. In fact, the old wizard slapped down the Balrog and marched out of the mountain with the rest of the fellowship. Meanwhile, King Theoden of Rohan managed to get cut down at Helm's Deep and, oh yeah, Boromir lives. Is this...

Lord of the Rings™, The Battle for Middle-earth

While EA has earned a bad reputation lately as a cold, uncaring corporate giant, the fact of the matter is, they generally make good licensed games. Catwoman and Goldeneye: Rogue Agent notwithstanding, they've generally done justice to their licensed...

Great graphics and presentation ; Wonderful soundtrack ; Mostly does the license justice

Simple and dumbed-down ; A strategy game without much strategy ; The campaign modes are full of inconsistencies

If you're a fan of the films that's never played an RTS, this is a good place to start. On the other hand, if you've already played a few RTSes, this one just won't seem up to snuff.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth

Curve: Battle for Middle Earth is a thoroughly enjoyable game, but it's not going to turn the RTS genre on its ear. Everything about it says "new gamer friendly," which is not a bad thing, to be sure, but the lack of an in-depth tech tree and the heavy...

The license helps make an otherwise solid RTS even better.

Great use of the license, huge battles, nice subtle interface, fun single-player game

Framerate slowdowns in big battles, some annoying unit issues

Making it easy to rule them all.

Fast actin’; Good graphics; Map is almost worth admission; Streamlined

Dumbed-down; Power points and magic trees?; Chugs during big battles

In both campaigns, you pick your battles from a beautifully rendered, 3D map of Middle Earth. Many realms and regions are named and briefly described, along with incredible visual touches like smoke rising from a perpetually eruptive Mount Doom, subtle...

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth review

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth is one of the latest instalments in the LOTR franchise from EA games. BFME is the first real-time strategy LOTR game and it works well. Set out very much like the Command and Conquer games (not...

The music is great throughout, providing you with the typical classical music associated with the LOTR franchise. It adds atmosphere to the battles and would make you feel a part of the LOTR experience. The narration between levels is done superbly by...

Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth Review [PC]

I love the Lord of the Rings films although I wouldn't go as far as to say that I'm a true Tolkien fan-boy as I've only seen the movies and I've only read part of the books. Nevertheless when I first heard of The Battle for Middle-Earth I......

Good use of the movie licence (for a change) ; Play your favourite battles from the film ; Fairly good graphics engine, with some pretty cool effects ; Unique races with different play styles ; Fairly new approach to base-building, which works ;...

Very demanding specs, especially on large battles ; Daft A.I for certain units/heroes ; Some poor visuals ; Disappointment at the limited campaign. Not what I (and others) expected ; Fairly repetitive towards the end

Good - Good use of the movie licence (for a change) - Play your favourite battles from the film - Fairly good graphics engine, with some pretty cool effects - Unique races with different play styles - Fairly new approach to base-building, which works!...

Product Specifications

Experience Middle-earth like never before in The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth, the first The Lord of the Rings game that puts you in command of a real-time, open world. Control the legendary heroes, massive armies, and epic campaigns of Middle-earth based upon all three films of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. From waging all-out combat among the vast forces of good and evil to controlling your favorite heroes and characters to managing the troops and resources of your side, the fate of a living, breathing Middle-earth is in your hands. Whether choosing to command the forces of good or evil, PC gamers are in complete control of the epic campaigns depicted in all three films of the trilogy. More than faceless units, every character in the game expresses real-time emotions that change depending on their situation - watch your swordsmen tremble with fear as they nerve themselves to face advancing Trolls and feel their exultation as they celebrate a hard-fought victory. Building on a highly advanced version of the acclaimed Sage 3D game engine first used in Command and Conquer Generals, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth allows you to command the forces of light or darkness in two separate campaigns. You'll have to choose your forces wisely, since each army has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth offers a truly memorable entertainment experience: the first RTS game that brings an entire world to life.
