Thomas Was Alone Review

I would be friends with Thomas. Seems like a nice fellow, even if it's not… you know, a fellow.

Story got me caring about, essentially, pixels; Minimal aesthetic is detailed like crazy; Music is dreamy and lovely; Controls are tight and easy

Except that he's a block. Like I said, it's weird.

There was nothing. And then there was Thomas. Thomas is an AI. A rectangular red one. He is self aware, with an instinct to move up and to the right. The tale is told through quotation text from those outside the machine that witnessed the accidental...

Nearing the end and growing a little weary, it was time to take break. Coming back to it with a fresh mind was a reminder of what works well: the beautiful musical arrangements that stand strong by the appropriate narration, and that to play it on mute...

This independent PC game about friendship and jumping rectangles shows how great writing can take a game from entertaining to truly memorable.

Thomas Was Alone sells itself as “a minimalist game about jumping and friendship” – and unlike most slogans, this one doesn’t overstate itself. I can say with reasonable confidence that it is the most endearingly characterful game about jumping...

Thomas Was Alone utilizes its diverse characters and varied obstacles to create an engaging platformer.

Creative storytelling ; Inventive obstacles require smart coordination ; Cohesive soundtrack and visual design

Rarely offers challenge ; No native controller support

Thomas Was Alone is a modest adventure that makes great use of its sparse elements to draw you in. It's disappointing that a controller is not supported natively, but even using a keyboard to guide your rectangular friends doesn't hinder your ability...

A tale of cubes, friendship and why rogue AI isn't always bad.

Occasionally frustrates, but Thomas Was Alone instantly and wittily overcomes its rudimentary nature with bags of charm and thoughtful puzzling.

Thomas Was Alone- PC

Playing it over the course of the last week, with my partner in the background laughing along and contributing ideas has been one of the best experiences I've had with a game all year - and something I recommend everyone else try too.

The game introduces each new mechanic slowly - perhaps too slowly - but in its final act empties the contents of the toy box all over the carpet and never tells you to tidy up. It's here the game's puzzles come into their own - and all of Thomas'...

Its platforms aren't demanding and its puzzles won't befuddle you for more than a few hours in total, but it does have the finest party of adventurers I've met for a while.

Short and sweet without any filler, Thomas Was Alone is a worthwhile experience that rises above its basic mechanics to prove heartfelt and engaging in unexpected ways.
