Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Review

The latest expansion takes the samurai out in a blaze of glory.

Good campaign; great mix of old and new units; gotta love the new cannons

Units seem slightly too fast; AI squanders cavalry and still can't assault a fortress; limited replay value

Help! My samurai has fallen and can't get up! Oh well, I guess it's past time I replace him -- time to go shopping for the giant robot samurai warrior I've always wanted. When do you think Creative Assembly will get around to a sci-fi Total War game?

This stand-alone expansion modernizes Total War while remaining true to tradition.

Stands alone but you can spar with Shogun 2 players ; Modern era units add more bang to the Total War formula ; Off shore bombardment breathes new life into navies ; Mix of new and old units lets you bring swords to a (Gatling) gun fight

Long load times ; Railroads have limited utility

Much of the campaign's challenge stems from the need to carefully modernize without alienating the people. Certain technologies and buildings can increase your modernization level, which improves your research rate and opens additional research...

A fantastic expansion that'll make you fall for Shogun 2 all over again.

Yes, Fall of the Samurai is an expansion, but like any good expansion – even standalone expansion – it doesn't just add things to the original, it changes them. You'll get an experience much more like a Civil War-era wargame with Fall of the Samurai,...

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Review

To say that Fall of the Samurai, (the latest content expansion for Creative Assembly's highly successful Total War instalment Shogun 2), didn't meet expectations would be wrong. Play it, and you'll find a well-crafted experience, that's challenging,...

Inciting a revolt in a friendly neighbour, watching their faction crumble, and then sweeping in to pick up the pieces is rather satisfying.

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai PC Review

Fall of the Samurai is a stand-alone expansion for Creative Assembly's award winning Total War: Shogun 2. However, its status as an 'expansion' should not suggest that this is mere content pack for an existing game, as the sweeping changes introduced...

A new type of warfare ; Totally different from its source ; Same brilliant Total War gameplay

Will keep you up past your bedtime (just....one....more....turn....)

The most modern Total War to date.

With over 100 hours of gameplay,Fall of the Samurai adds immense value to the Total War: Shogun 2 experience. Not only have there been improvements made to the interface, combat, and tech tree, but a multi-faceted layer of strategy depth has also been...

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai

Shogun 2 marches into the modern era - thankfully, without Tom Cruise. Is this new, stand-alone expansion..

Perhaps Creative Assembly should also start pondering about ‘where to from here’. Because I can think of another collection of mountainous islands that experienced years of civil strife, muskets, and violence in the middle of the 19th century. “Total...

Total War: Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai Review

But in the end the overall appeal, like with any expansion, lies with fans of the original, and does very little to try and win new players into the fold. But with Shogun 2 scoring top marks across the board from both critics and fans alike, this is...

New setting adds many new gameplay features; East meets West allows for many nuanced diplomatic choices; Great art direction from original expanded and improved with new visual effects

Can become overly complicated during end-game ; Focus on ranged and naval combat may deter some fans; No Tom Cruise unit in sight

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai

There's a magic in Fall of the Samurai's weird juxtaposition of old and new.

Guns and swords ; No Tom Cruise

Railways are a bit rubbish ; Loading times

Now there's a thought.
