Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Review

The latest expansion takes the samurai out in a blaze of glory.

Good campaign; great mix of old and new units; gotta love the new cannons

Units seem slightly too fast; AI squanders cavalry and still can't assault a fortress; limited replay value

Help! My samurai has fallen and can't get up! Oh well, I guess it's past time I replace him -- time to go shopping for the giant robot samurai warrior I've always wanted. When do you think Creative Assembly will get around to a sci-fi Total War game?

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Review

This stand-alone expansion modernizes Total War while remaining true to tradition.

Stands alone but you can spar with Shogun 2 players ; Modern era units add more bang to the Total War formula ; Off shore bombardment breathes new life into navies ; Mix of new and old units lets you bring swords to a (Gatling) gun fight

Long load times ; Railroads have limited utility

Much of the campaign's challenge stems from the need to carefully modernize without alienating the people. Certain technologies and buildings can increase your modernization level, which improves your research rate and opens additional research...

Total War: Shogun 2 -- Fall of the Samurai Review

A fantastic expansion that'll make you fall for Shogun 2 all over again.

Yes, Fall of the Samurai is an expansion, but like any good expansion – even standalone expansion – it doesn't just add things to the original, it changes them. You'll get an experience much more like a Civil War-era wargame with Fall of the Samurai,...

Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Review

Inciting a revolt in a friendly neighbour, watching their faction crumble, and then sweeping in to pick up the pieces is rather satisfying.

Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai- PC

Fans of the series who want to play with ironclads, railroads, and Gatling guns shouldn't hesitate to pick it up. If, however, you haven't enjoyed the modern thrust of the series from Empire onward, then you should pass on this one.

Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai- PC

After a decade of development, and thousands of years of bloodshed and territorial domination, it seems the Total War series has come full circle. Fall of the Samurai is the resounding conclusion, a well-thought out, well-crafted game that puts...

Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai- PC

A wealth of additions to the Shogun 2 formula make Fall of the Samurai feel more robust than many true sequels. Once again, The Creative Assembly demonstrate how far ahead of the competition they are.

Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai- PC

You'll get an experience much more like a Civil War-era wargame with Fall of the Samurai, as opposed to a medieval wargame with the original Shogun 2, and that, in itself, is worth the cost of admission, let alone all the new units, locations,...

Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai- PC

While Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of The Samurai has enough updates and additions to make it a fantastic and worthwhile purchase, it's most interesting feature is the way it handles such an important turning point in Japanese history. One for Total War...
