Hands-on Review: Arcam rCube iPod Speaker Dock

Arcam's rCube costs a bunch, but it delivers the sonic goods in a small package.

Notable new Blu-ray and DVD releases in stores this week.

Sick of those £50 iPod docks that spew out meek music? Then try Arcam's rCube for size; Wi-Fi meets Hi-Fi on this ‘pod-friendly speaker that's about as high-end as it gets at this size. Ready for more good news? It's portable. Yup - unplug the 5kg...

Loud volumes, portability, design, build quality, multi-room and streaming possibilities

Acoustic music, fiddly remote

With millions of us having ditched our CD collections this kind of product ought to do well with people searching for a modern hi-fi system. Small, perfectly formed and portable, the rCube’s promise of lossless music streaming dimension is exciting and...

Arcam rCube - £500

Arcam has distilled its audio expertise into a compact iPod system - the rCube. Richard Black asks if this is the ideal office/kitchen set-up?

Impressively capable sonically, with good, clear sound

Wi-fi connectivity is an optional extra and it could do with a radio tuner

If you have a music library on an iPod, this is a great way to enjoy it (almost) anywhere

Apple's one venture into own-branded speakers was the quickly forgotten Apple iPod Hi-Fi – a great, big slab that looked like a single speaker had toppled onto its side.

The Arcam rCube matches a minimalist design aesthetic that Apple would be proud of, with sensational audio performance and smart wireless functionality. With a recent price drop it really does earn its five-star reviews.

Arcam claims its has made the 'world's best' iPod dock... and we wholeheartedly agree.

The Arcam rCube may have come too late to be entered into our 2010 Awards, but for me it would have been my product of the year. As it stands it is day one of 2011 and it will take something truly special over the next 364 days to displace it in my...

Given that it's gunning for B&W's mighty Zeppelin iPod dock, the rCube doesn't look like much of a challenger. At 20cm cubed, it looks almost comically small in this assembled company – but, as every sensible person knows, size isn't everything.

It handles complex or muddy mixes without breaking a sweat, and can turn its hand from a massed orchestral assault to a single-voice-with-guitar with ease.

Best iPod dock ?150-?400, Awards 2011. Plenty to offer including unique streaming features, and recent price drop makes it even better value

Compact, solid build; cohesive sound; wireless options with multiroom potential; more portable than most; price cut

Fairly lightweight; vocals lack a touch of clarity
