Focal XS 2.1 iPod Amplified Speaker Dock

The past seven years has seen rapid proliferation of the iPod dock market. Unfortunately, while many of the products have succeeded in following the Apple aesthetic, rarely is there substance behind the flash. Is the entry by Focal merely more eye...

The iPod dock market is certainly filled with a multitude of products, which by-and-large are aesthetically differentiated. Focal comes to this niche with a product that not only meets the aesthetic requirements typically associated with the market,...

Focal XS Book Review

These are great little plastic speakers for where you need them to amplify themselves and just disappear. They have no bass; I'd prefer the sound from a cheaper satellite system with a bad subwoofer than these speakers run with no subwoofers at all....

Focal XS 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System Review

What does a $180,000 pair of speakers sound like? Most of us will never get a chance to find out in our lifetimes, but the Grande Utopia EM has been dubbed by some as “the best loudspeakers in the world”. So when a big box arrived at my door and I...

the signature Focal sound at a (relatively) good price ; integrated iPod dock that also charges your device ; handsome, good looking

remote control needs line of sight, sometimes a little hit or miss ; subwoofer could use a bit more oomph. Doesn’t go as loud as you’d expect ; lots of far cheaper sound systems out there if your listening needs aren’t as discerning

But truthfully, what you’re really paying for is the Focal sound, and as my side by side comparison can attest, that’s what you’re getting. If you’re in the market for high end multimedia speakers, it can’t hurt to drop by an authorized retailer...

Focal XS 2.1 Multimedia Sound System

The professionals know better, after all they have been at it for many more years than most and frequently have the budgets to allow for a serious studio setup. The rest, and probably the majority of editors and shooters spend a great deal of time...

My bottom line is if budgetary limitations prevent you from going to that whole other financial level of high end studio monitors, than this is a darn great compromise. There is no more sour feeling than getting buyer's remorse, and you won't once you...

Review: Focal XS iPod/computer speaker system

Focal's XS is high-performance audio system that works with both iPods and your computer's digital-audio signal. Although it's expensive, you're paying for that flexibility as well as an attractive, iMac-matching design.

It’s obvious that the XS’s design was inspired by the look of Apple's current iMac. The two satellite speakers each feature a weighted base finished in glossy black; an angled, brushed-metal stand that echoes those on the iMac and Apple's Cinema...

Focal XS Book review

The Focal XS Book is a self-powered stereo speaker system, designed to sit on the desktop. It comprises two modernly styled cabinets standing around 11in tall, rectangular boxes that swell and flare out toward the front to accomodate the main mid-bass...

These speakers can rock and swing with some conviction – their main appeal, we’d contend. Stereo soundstaging and midband articulation are not so compelling, and the overall sound was a touch too sibilant for our tastes. Build quality is generally good...

Focal XS Book review

We reckon these Focal XS Book speakers are trying to channel some MacBook desirability. That's no bad thing. Certainly the design fits; they stand tall and look smart. The Focals' footprint is certainly within the boundaries of acceptability, but at...

Focal XS Book

Sensational scale and presence for a desktop speaker, detailed, dynamic sound, good stereo image

Could be too big for some desktops

A potent-sounding speaker, which brings hi-fi listening to your desktop

Focal XS Book Wireless

A thoroughly listenable set of desktop speakers with stacks of detail and Bluetooth convenience, if not the last word in excitement

Great scale ; Good stereo sound ; Detailed and dynamic ; aptX Bluetooth connectivity is a nice touch

A little dynamically restrained ; Bass could be better

That said, since the original Focal XS Books arrived, we’ve seen some great steps forward in desktop audio. Though the originals were a five-star product, simply adding wireless connectivity to a 2011 product seems like a missed opportunity for new...
