Alienware X51 Review

Powerful console-size PC with Nvidia Optimus technology

Needs bay for SSD; lacks SATA 6Gb/s support and front USB 3.0 ports

DON’T BLINK, it’s not a game console. It’s something far better—a PC that’s as small as the original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the promise of pretty good gaming performance, too.

Gaming consoles can do some amazing things, no question, but there's really no comparing the graphical output and processing power of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 with a proper gaming PC. Certainly not now, more than five years after the current...

Beautifully compact design ; Lots of power for the price ; USB 3.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi beat you to the punch on upgrades ; Easy access interior, part-swapping

Minimally flexible for future upgrades ; More complex than a standalone console ; Hefty power brick will need to be hidden away under some furniture

There is serious gaming power in this relatively tiny box, and the whole thing taken together represents one of the best values out there for high-performance PC gaming.

Do you identify yourself as a PC gamer? Or do you prefer consoles, perhaps? Truth be told, there's not a lot separating the two these days. With notable exceptions, today's top games are built for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and unless you can't live without...

Good value for the money ; Small form factor makes for a place-anywhere gaming PC ; Clever case allows for easy upgrades

Cheaper configurations have limited upgrade potential ; No wireless controller or remote ; No solid state drive option

A stone's throw shy of the perfect living room PC

Alienware X51 (January 2012)

Scaling down a gaming desktop means sacrifice. In exchange for the reduced footprint, you lose performance, flexibility in upgrading, and often value. In spite of those issues, I still like the new Alienware X51 slim tower. Alienware's designers have...

The affordable Alienware X51 brings innovation to slim-tower PCs by offering a full-size graphics card.

Despite the big 3D card, the X51's slim-tower chassis still has a limited upgrade path.

Alienware has successfully brought its brand to an affordable, suitably stylized package, and I can recommend the X51 to anyone in the market for a mainstream gaming PC.

Which Web Host Do You Need? Six Small-Business Plans Compared

Websites don't build themselves. They require a considerable investment of energy, expertise, and design know-how to construct and launch. But building a site is only half the story: Websites also have to be hosted on servers, ready for--you hope--the...

The front of the system has the usual backlit alien head Alienware logo, flanked by the lit color panels. Next to the slot-loading DVD drive on the front are two USB 2.0 ports and two audio jacks for a headset. On the back, you'll find a Kensington...

Nice performance from a compact system. Easy-to-service interior. USB 3.0 ports. HDMI video output. Up to three monitor support. Integrated Wi-Fi

External power supply. No internal expansion room whatsoever. Some fan noise

The Alienware X51 gaming desktop goes after the console gamer that wants a bit more out of their gaming experience.

GOOD FOR GAMING!

Alienware X51

Gaming-PC makers, take note: One of your biggest wheels—the folks behind some of the hunkiest PCs around—just made clear that bigger isn't always better. Most gamers don't need a computer with a case roomy enough for three graphics cards, six hard...

Compact, well-designed chassis ; Good performance for mainstream gamers, at a price lower than many larger alternatives

Very large external power brick ; Small size means minimal expandability ; Blu-ray drive is a $100 extra

The compact X51 is a sleek-looking, console-like gaming PC at a reasonable price. It’s best for those more concerned about enjoying games than getting ultimate performance and extreme upgradability.

When dedicated gamers and neophytes alike think of top-end gaming super computers, it's likely that Alienware is the brand that comes to mind. The Alienware X51 gaming computer combines the company's legendary experience with cutting-edge hardware to...

The amazing design and high-end processor are two big pluses for this machine

The PC lacks an SSD and has only one optical drive

This PC lacks some niceties, but the powerful i7 980 processor, dual video cards and overall quality build make the Alienware Area-51 ALX a very solid choice.

Small, but imperfectly formed

Good performance ; Small footprint ; Well engineered

Not a gaming powerhouse ; Price

The Alienware X51 has landed, but is this tech from another world? We take a look at the powerhouse gaming PC to see how it stacks up

Superb value ; Small footprint ; Phenomally powerful

Tricky to upgrade ; Still pricier than a console

For £899 at the top of the range, the Alienware X51 is packed to the gunnels with power and a gaming PC of this size and power for this price is astounding.
