Apple iMac 20-Inch

Apple iMacs are always beautifully designed, but the latest, a $2,199 (direct) system with a gorgeous 20-inch flat screen (up from 17), is almost too striking to relegate to a desktop. The super-sized display is a joy to view whether you're watching...

Apple IMAC G4/800

Adjustable display ; Innovative design ; Fast G4 processor ; Small footprint ; Built-in SuperDrive

Not as fast as Power Mac G4 with same processor speed ; All ports on back of base ; No composite video out or support for unmirrored displays

Apple iMac 17-inch Widescreen

The 17-inch flat-panel iMac sells for $1,999 (list), which is $200 more than the top configuration of the 15-inch iMac. We think anyone viewing the two side by side would happily pay the extra money. The screen has a maximum resolution of 1,440-by-900...

iMac G4/800

Apple's new iMac is a high-style device that seems to be bound for art galleries and design museums. But more important than its form is its function: it's fast enough for demanding Mac users and has a large-enough display that's clear and easy on the...

iMac and iMac Special Edition

These iMacs are perfectly capable computers that perform well enough for all but the most demanding users. Both iMacs turned in respectable scores in our Speedmark, Quake III, and iTunes tests, and they seemed to handle Mac OS X 10.1 with aplomb. The soft

Solid performance in OS 9 and OS X 10.1 ; high-capacity hard drive

Inflexible Software Restore CD ; not terribly "special" for its price

My first Mac - I am very impressed

I've had my iMac G4 for over five years now and it is my favourite computer. The design of the computer itself is fantastic with the screen you can manoeuvre how ever you wish. The new Intel iMacs are probably excellent too but I still think the iMac...

Very easy to use, fantastic design with easy to move screen. Quite fast (even after five years) and great for doing video editing, photo editing, etc

A bit slower on the internet than my more up to date Windows PC and Adobe Flash doesn't work fantastically well

Consumer review by:

One of my favorite iMacs of all time.

I love the moveable monitor screen and the dome shape. The DVD drive is cool to watch as it flips out. Performance-wise, this iMac won't let you down. iStat says its CPU is always busy, even when it's not running anything, but yet performance is...

The G4 processor is a real worker and screamer; handles Leopard and all quite well even though it's always using a lot of CPU power

USB 1.1 is very slow for my newer peripherals (HDs and etc.), could perform a bit better overall. Needs AirPort Extreme capability, but sadly, this didn't come to be

Consumer review by:

a good computer with decent features

a large screen, good speakers, nice keyboard

bad mouse, low movement of screen, not many slots

Another thing that is under-rated or not evaluated

There is something to be said for __RELIABILITY__.. My iMac here has been running over a year and a half straight, folding proteins and everything normal I do day to day 24/7 with no downtime. There have been no breakdowns and no OS reinstalls....

Product Specifications

Designed to be the digital centerpiece of your home and the fastest way to the Internet, the iMac family comes with a choice of flat-panel displays. iMac offers fast G4 processors, fast 333MHz DDR memory, blazing 3D graphics and high-speed USB 2.0. Plus the latest in wireless communications with support for AirPort Extreme and optional built-in Bluetooth. The iLife software application suite that come on your iMac include iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD. They let you do fun, creative things with your pictures, music and movies - and share them with family and friends - in ways that people who use PCs can only dream about. And whether you're creating music CDs, publishing your digital pictures online, editing digital video or burning your own DVDs, you can do all these things and more quite nicely without referring to a manual. It's all part of the iLife experience. The iMac with SuperDrive lets you burn your own movies and photos on a disc that plays in almost any standard player. And, naturally, you can pop in your DVD movies and watch them in widescreen letterbox format on the brilliant LCD display of your iMac. Say goodbye to being forced to set up your computer near a phone jack. Pop an optional AirPort Extreme Card into your iMac, and you're ready for the freedom of wireless networking from anywhere in your home or dorm - up to 45 metres from an AirPort Extreme Base Station. And by the way, adding an AirPort Extreme Card is a snap, even for first-time computer users. Beneath the iMac's base is an access cover held in place by four screws. Images printed under the access cover show you how additional memory and the AirPort Extreme Card fit in the base when properly installed. It's that simple. All iMac models can be custom-configured with an internal Bluetooth module to connect your digital devices wirelessly. Operating within a 30-foot radius, it enables wireless data transfers between a rapidly growing list of Bluetooth-enabled products, including the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Wireless Mouse. Using iSync, you can use Bluetooth to synchronize your personal information between your iMac, your mobile phone and your Palm OS-based handheld. If you're interested in getting Bluetooth capability for your iMac, the easiest way is to have the Bluetooth module built in at the time you order your system - you can order a Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mouse at the same time, too. If you decide after purchasing your system that you want Bluetooth capability, you can easily plug in an external D-Link USB Bluetooth Adapter. The iMac's sizzling graphics processors kick Quartz Extreme and 3D games and graphics into high gear with hardware transform and lighting (T&L), per-pixel shading and drop-dead gorgeous effects at high resolutions. All models deliver over a billion textured pixels per second. And with Quartz Extreme, the graphics processors take over the transform and lighting calculation functions from the iMac's CPU, freeing the PowerPC G4 processor to perform essential system tasks faster than ever before. Thanks to what's inside its ultra-compact 27 cm base, the iMac is several leaps ahead of any other consumer desktop system out there - just like its revolutionary predecessor. So how did Apple pack so much power and functionality into such a small space? Credit a rigorous design approach that optimized every available bit of space and resulted in no wasted corners. Starting with a custom-designed circular logic board that fills the entire diameter of the base, Apple engineered enough space to fit in a full-height optical drive such as the SuperDrive. On top of the optical drive are a high-capacity 3.5-inch hard disk drive and even the power supply - a split design that tucks neatly into the top of the base.
