Asus Essentio CM5571-BR003 and HP Pavilion p6230y

Today we'll take a look at two desktop computers available in retail stores, the Asus Essentio CM5571-BR003 and the HP Pavilion p6230y. Both offer decent performance at a reasonable price.

Other than upgrading to wireless networking, the Essentio has capacity for other upgrades as well. There is room for an extra hard drive if the standard 750 GB of storage is not enough. There are also four RAM slots, allowing you to upgrade from the 6...

It's easily expandable. If you know how you can upgrade it past machines in higher price ranges. See summary

The processor really is out of date but it's not too bad

Excellent for upgrade

Don't know why CNET blasted on this system just because of price? Gateway better option??? Price is down now and for $400 is a GREAT purchase. Ditch the power, (cheap unit from china anyway) go to 500watt or better unit, get a good graphics card (mine:...

"Good cheap PC, Best Buy Package price @$427 w/750 GB HD"

This is a good computer for basic home office use. We got it at a great price as part of a Best Buy $1299 package with both a Gateway/Acer Portable & NetBook, with a $99 20" ASUS LCD HD monitor, NetGear router & Geek Squad home install

Graphics support is weak, but our boys use PlayStation 3 & Wii for gaming so the trade-off for low cost is fair. MMP games like the Warcraft series work well on the system. My son watches web TV shows which look great on the ASUS LCD monitor

"Upgradable to a very nice unit."

I was just browsing through computers at Best...

Plenty of room for expansion, very quiet. Runs great for the money

Slightly slow compared to similar priced units, but don't let that detract you from a great computer built by a very respectable company. Slightly underpowered, you'll need to swap a bigger power supply in order to put in a good vid card
