Does anyone know?

Asus has discontinued the RS161-E2/PA2 or so it seems. Newegg has not deactivated the server as yet. I bought 8 sticks of DDR and 2 940 pin cpu's weeks before the original order. Which will probably go to waiste if I can't find a budget barebone. Does...

I would like to be able to comment. The E4 is a beauty though

Newegg sent the RS161-E4/PA2 by mistake (thank you Newegg) which I had to keep in order to not loose a client

works

I was not able to install Windows server 2003 with a Highpoint 2310(PCIe) or 1720(PCI) When 2003 would say detecting hardware, the server would reboot I don't want to try other raid controllers at this time, so I just used the integrated RAID...

It is a good server for the price

ASUS web site very slow ; You can download all the required drivers from the TYAN website for the S2895 board, as they use the same chip set, do not install the NIC or audio driver of course, but it will install the RAID tool and the SM bus driver as...

This is just an addition to my previous post

cheap

Please make sure you know that this server tales about 30 seconds to power on - aka until you see video on bios version 1005

Great value, if setting it up correctly

You can't beat the price! The memory is more expensive because it is an older technology. There are not many socket 940 CPU to choose from. But overall, it is a great value and a great server.

Low cost, 1U, includes CD-ROM, 2 hot-swap RAID, 500W power supply

Very loud fan. I mean very very loud, we can hear it outside of the server room. However, the fan speed can be turned down in BIOS (smart fan) ; Couldn't post at first, turns out it needs ECC memory. We put in ECC + Registered server memory and it...

Good but could be better

The cost of DDR memory for this server is significantly higher then the DDR2 and DDR3 used in newer servers. This machine is very loud but since its a server and most of the time nobody needs to sit next to it thats ok.

Inexpensive for the performance

The onboard gigabit lan has no jumbo frame support ; The bios needed to be flashed out of the box because for some strange reason it could not move more then 500 KB/s though the onboard lan and an intel gigabit card I installed to troubleshoot the problem

Amazingly fast!

You know what you get. Running Windows server with a couple CPU/memory intensive virtual machines without a hicup. This is a high value and very convenient server barebone. Do develop a comprehensive backup plan. If you are running cluster this would...

Good value. Very easy to install. Smooth edges like a mature server should be. Supports Dual Opteron, 16GB memory, 2x SATA 3.0 while remain 2 PCI slot for upgrade. Once it's up and running, it's amazingly fast. You'll wonder why pay 2 grand more for a...

Hard drives is the weakist link. It's not for the performance but the scalibility. 2x SATA drives and that's it. DDR Memory support is kinda old tech but not really a drawback. If you are installing Windows system with RAID-1 configuration, there's no...

Great buy, would consider another

Considering buying another for backup, not that I am waiting for this to fail but mostly because it would be like a cheap insurance policy.

Supports 2 processors and more than enough memory. Was able to build a real budget server for our website without sacrificing performance. Uses Opteron 940 2XX chips which can be found very cheaply. I am considering building another as a dedicated SQL...

Only supports 2 hard drives so you can only use RAID 0 and 1. Can not be fitted with a redundant power supply (but then again it is only a single Motherboard so there are potentially 2 single points of hardware failure). For the money though, this is...

ASUS RS161-E4/PA2 1U Barebone Server NVIDIA nForce4 Professional 2200 (CK8-04) Dual 1207(F) Dual AMD Opteron

Excellent server, I am currently running several of these on our network flawless operation

do not buy the refurb units for a lower price they ship incomplete and are DOA ; You will need an updated bios chip from from manufacture they charge $20 to ship it, for many configurations
