Invasion of the tabletop tablets: Are these fiendishly clever hybrids the ultimate family PCs?

You can thank Windows 8 for this bold new experiment: touchscreen all-in-one computers that can move all around the house.

Two computers in one ; Desktop Core i5 processor ; 1TB, 7200 rpm hard drive

Mode switching can be clumsy ; Webcam nonfunctional in Android mode ; No HDMI input on either base or tablet

Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K)

The Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K) is an all-in-one Windows 8 PC where the screen is also an 18-inch Android tablet. You can switch back and forth between Windows and Android, so you can complete your work (or play) in Windows on a tabletop device...

Splashtop lets you use Windows 8 around the house. Can use Android apps. Speedy quad-core processor and discrete graphics. Four USB 3.0 ports. Quick switch between environments

Some lag on tablet when out of dock. Webcam not accessible to Windows when away from dock. Mouse and keyboard have limited range. No HDMI-in. Crashes in either OS can make the system seem unresponsive

In the blockbuster movie Avatar, the head technician character grabs active telemetry data from a desktop workstation and continues to work with it on a networked tablet. This is the essential idea behind the Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K) . You...

Detachable screen gives you a jumbo Android tablet to take to the couch or kitchen, Good performance in desktop mode, HDMI port lets you connect a second monitor when tablet is in use elsewhere

18.4-inch tablet weighs over 5 pounds, has lackluster battery life, Managing two operating systems on one device can be confusing, Screen is huge for a tablet, but small for a desktop for the price

You can think of the Transformer AIO as an innovative niche product, and maybe as a harbinger of the future. Switching between two operating systems isn't for everyone, but switching between desktop and tablet work is a trend that's here to stay.

Asus Transformer AiO P1801 Review

Asus has a lot of offbeat and unthinkable designs to its credit, especially for their Android tablets. Remember the Eee Pad Slider and Transformer Prime? Such unique designs present a new way to use devices and take user experience to a new level....

Now, for the most interesting bit—switching of the operating system. With the tablet docked to the PC Station, you have a desktop PC running Windows 8. While docked, the blue button switches between Android and Windows 8. When undocked, the Android OS...

Asus Transformer AiO P1801 Review - Tech2

Asus has come out with many offbeat and unthinkable designs in the past, especially for their Android tablets. Remember the Eee Pad Slider and Transformer

This particular variant of the Asus Transformer AiO powered by Intel Core i3 processor is priced at Rs 86,999. A Core i5 variant is also available, which is priced at Rs 92,999. The Transformer AiO is a great concept, but it’s a bit too large. It would...

Asus Transformer AiO P1801 review

A desktop/tablet hybrid; a tabtop?

Two processors run both Windows 8 and Jelly Bean ; Tablet has built-in handle and stand

Tablet is large and unwieldy on its own ; Somewhat impractical

The Transformer AiO is certainly an odd duck when it comes to hybrid computers, but with both Windows 8 and Jelly Bean running smoothly it could potentially replace a whole host of other devices in the home.

Asus Transformer P1801 review

An innovative PC and tablet in one, allowing for easy PC use throughout your home

Although it's technically very impressive, it's hard to see what the Transformer's exact niche is. The tablet's a bit too big to be really convenient to use on your lap in front of the TV, but a small size wouldn't work so well as a display for a full...

Asus Asus Transformer P1801 review

Asus's Transformer P1801 is an odd beast: part extra-large Android tablet, part Windows 8 all-in-one desktop. When docked, the tablet is an 18.4in IPS display for the PC, but as soon as you lift it from the dock, it becomes a stand-alone tablet with a...
