Dell Dimension 3100

Inexpensive. Fast processor and expansive hard drive for a sub-AU$1500 machine. Windows XP Media Center Edition enables it to be used as a basic living room PC. 13-in-1 memory card reader. Bundled USB keyboard, optical mouse and stereo speakers.

Optima WorkPro 7000T offers better value for money. No Firewire port. Integrated graphics and sound hinders multimedia performance. Meagre software bundle. Card reader takes up the only 3.5-inch drive bay.

For users on a budget, the Dimension 3100 has most of its bases covered despite there being alternatives that provide superior value for money.

Dell Inspiron 1300 Review (pics, specs)

The hinges are firm, there's no wobble of the screen even if you move the notebook around.  This is impressive, often with budget notebooks the hinges can be somewhat weak.  The protection provided by the lid is also good, if you push in on the lid...

Decent looking design that's actually more appealing than some higher-end Inspirons ; 5400RPM hard drive is impressive for a budget PC ; Cheap, $700 or less with some configurations ; Overall decent build and sturdy feeling for a budget PC

Uses old Intel 910GML chipset that limits bus speed to 400MHz, even if processor and memory can run at 533MHz and so hurts Pentium M 740 and memory performance ; Very basic selection of ports ; Screen is just okay, some colors don't seem true and light...

In regards to the issue with the misrepresenatation of the 1300 as having a 533MHz bus speed when it does not, that's obviously a knock against customer support and overall treatment of customers.  The resolution Dell has taken of now representing the...

Dell Inspiron 1300

Budget notebooks have never been better! Low-end notebooks were always priced at $800 or more, and never really packed the "oomph" of higher-spec expensive notebooks. This may have changed. The Dell Inspiron 1300 starts at $599, and the model we...

Good performance, spacious hard disk, DVDR/W drive, great screen, excellent WiFi signal, solid construction, quality keyboard

lack of microphone, speakers aren't great, almost no ExpressCard peripherals available

The Inspiron 1300 has set the benchmark for budget notebooks for a while yet, with it's solid performance and even better price. Although the speakers are rather dire and the lack of microphone is irritating, what do you really expect for an $800...

Dell Dimension 5150

Even though it would void the warranty, this Dell looks like a prime candidate for overclocking. Behind the front panel of the BTX case is a gaping ho...

Great media capabilities

Poor benchmark performance

For the price this system is a very decent all round performer.

Dell Inspiron 630m (14.1-inch, 2GHz)

Dell's mid-range Inspiron 630m provides excellent value for money with a hearty system under its hood, a 14.1-inch widescreen display and the option of Windows Media Center.

Good performance and long battery life. Multi-format DVD burner with dual-layer. Can play CDs/DVDs without booting Windows. Windows Media Center operating system optional. Good-sized keyboard and widescreen display.

Somewhat heavy. No dedicated graphics card.

Dell's Inspiron 630m is a great value for money laptop providing good performance, long battery life, external multimedia controls and enough processing power to breeze through common office tasks.
