Dell Dimension C521 Desktop

Last year, Dell, in a rather surprising announcement and much to the delight of AMD fans indicated that it would be using AMD processors as part of their budget desktop ranges. This was a real shot in the arm for both AMD and the end-user market as it...

The Dell Dimension C521 sacrifices some expansion room to keep its case skinnier than a typical midsize tower PC. Even so, the $729 (as of November 6, 2006) C521 is a good choice if you seek a space-conscious, low-cost system that retains some...

Case mounts horizontally or vertically ; Reasonable performance for the price

Limited internal expansion room

The inexpensive C521 is a solid performer; its compact design makes it a great fit for tight spaces.

Apple made news earlier this year by switching entirely to an Intel-based platform. Now Dell is making news by (finally) adding AMD processors to its stable of multimedia-oriented PCs. The Round Rock, Texas-based company's first AMD effort, the Dell...

Compact form factor. AMD processor. Humongous 320GB hard drive. Desktop components. Single TV tuner. Good USB multimedia keyboard/mouse combo. Quiet, thanks to BTX design and slow-turning fans

Compact form factor necessitates half-height cards. Slower than Intel Core 2 Duo systems. TV tuner isn't HDTV/ATSC-compatible. Ugly external IR receiver for MCE remote. Short, 90-day security subscription

An AMD processor in a Dell? Who'd have thunk it? Compact and versatile with a decent bang for the buck, the Dell Dimension C521 is a good first AMD effort from Dell.

While this svelte PC offers few expansion options, it comes with extra memory and a large monitor.

Slim case; 2GB RAM; 20-inch wide-screen LCD

Smallish hard drive; one-year warranty; not much room for expansion

Double your display real estate by adding a second monitor. It's a snap: Here's how

Dell offers a variety of budget desktop PCs, we looked at the Dell Dimension C521, which starts out at less than $400 and includes nVidia and AMD Sempron technologies

If you are looking for a basic system and already have a good monitor, this Dell may be a good choice for you. With this computer you can surf the Internet, check you email, post to your blog and pay bills easily. It would also be perfect for student use.

For under $1000 the Dell C521 comes with a 17in LCD screen, keyboard and a mouse, making it a complete package that's ready to go from the moment it's...

Slim design, media card reader, quiet operation

Single hard drive bay, limited expansion options

The Dell C521 is a reasonable performer for the price. On top of the 17in LCD, keyboard and mouse, the inclusion of a media card reader accommodates the growing use of digital cameras with home computers. Test results indicate it will work well for...

This system marks the end of Dell's Intel-only approach to CPUs with its first-ever use of an AMD processor in a consumer PC. You're only getting an Athlon 64 3800, but it does signal Dell's intention to give the end user more choice

Decent graphics, Near-silent running

Miserly hard drive

Looks, graphics speed and near-silent running mean this is still a capable home budget PC despite its limitations

PC&TECH AUTHORITY - Recommended!

Dell's first foray into using AMD processors is a modest performer, but fair value.
