Dell Inspiron 531

AMD Athlon CPUs in Dells aren't anything new, but the name is: Instead of a new Dimension, this one is an Inspiron. Is it inspiring? Read on . . .

Nice price for a powerful mainstream system. Well equipped for students. Discrete graphics. Widescreen monitor. System also available with Intel processors (as Inspiron 530). Included 3GB of online storage for backup.

Still some bloatware. Only 90-day McAfee subscription. ATX case is less upgrade-friendly than the old BTX case.

An Inspiron that's not a laptop, the Dell Inspiron 531 replaces the venerable Dell Dimension brand as the company's mainstream consumer desktop line. Available with both Intel and AMD, this one has a speedy Athlon X2 processor.

Dell Inspiron 531

The Dell Inspiron 531 (along with a handful of other new desktops) marks the introduction of a more streamlined Dell product family. For both laptops and desktops, the Inspiron line will represent its mainstream consumer PCs, with the XPS looping...

Sleek new case design; overachieving application performance; finally has a Wi-Fi adapter option; integrated Bluetooth (shortly after launch); new, mostly useful support software.

Some higher-end configuration options are limited to Dell's XPS line.

The last of the major desktop vendors to update this year's desktops, Dell used that time to good advantage. On some tests, the Inspiron 531 is even faster than systems that cost $500 more. Keep your gaming and digital media ambitions modest, and this...

Dell Inspiron 531 (Blu-ray)

Earlier this year, Dell introduced the Inspiron desktop line as a replacement for its venerable Dimension desktop brand. The latest version of the Inspiron 531 ($1,129 direct, $1,409 with 20-inch widescreen LCD monitor) comes with a new addition: a...

Good price. Bluetooth receiver. Blu-ray drive. "No additional software" (no bloatware) option

Blu-ray is read-only. Other competitors at this price point offer better bang for buck

Dell improves the Inspiron 531 at a slightly higher price point than the system we previously reviewed, with more hardware, but it somehow falls short of the competition.

The Inspiron 531 features a fine, basic collection of components and offerings for anyone looking for a moderately powerful midrange desktop at an impressive price.

Very good value, Strong connectivity options, Solid productivity performance

Middle-of-the-line graphics card, Case difficult to open, Dell-specific software, tweaks unhelpful

"READ THIS IS YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING THIS PC. Great value, esp. if you upgrade yourself."

The key that I figured out after I bought my first computer from Dell 5 1/2 years ago is that they charge you more for doing stuff than doing it yourself. Adding memory yourself is simple and MUCH cheaper than getting it from them. BTY, the OS only...

Great bang-for-buck, many multimedia options

Fan on mine is loud, limited for gamers

"Computer was great, except for Vista!"

I configured and purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 three weeks ago (early October.) I built a great system, and was thrilled to be able to use a $350 coupon (on any build over $999.) I'd never had Vista before, but I figured it would be cool, too. I was...

"Windows XP Drivers for Inspiron 531"

I have successfully installed Windows XP on an Inspiron 531 and am really impressed with the speed and performance of this machine. For the relatively inexpensive cost of this machine, running XP makes it seem like a system that would have cost...

Fast when running Windows XP and is priced very well for the performance obtained

Slow when running Vista and would need memory and video upgrades to be as good as one running Windows XP

"Beautiful Computer very very quiet"

I had the Inspiron 531 computer for 2 and a half weeks. It is going back. The computer is fast and operates good. It is quiet not like the noisy Dimension I had.

Fast, not very big, very quiet

Vista ruins it, CD draws clumsy

"The small footprint 531s fits my needs."

I bought the 531s with 1gig of memory and Vista home premium. What a mistake! The system was so slow that I taught that there was something wrong with the computer. I spoke to my son-in-law and he suggested that an immediate upgrade in memory would...

small footprint and can handle most tasks well.

The memory that it came with made it run very, very slow.
