Dell OptiPlex GX280

Dell's OptiPlex business desktops have always been about power and management features, and the new OptiPlex GX280 ($1,427 direct) is no different. Housed in a space-saving small-desktop chassis that's easy to service, the GX280 utilizes the latest...

Lacks DVD writer

The Dell OptiPlex GX280 has the horsepower to handle the most demanding office applications, and Dell's management tools and Stable Image guarantee will appeal to IT administrators.

Computer Parts

Inexpensive ; Ready to go right out of the box ; Includes copy of XP Pro SP3 & COA ; Includes keyboard & mouse

No DVD drive ; Uses LP add in cards

The refurbished Dell OptiPlex GX280 fit my needs for a low cost basic PC pretty well, though realistically it does have a few issues that stop it from being a slam dunk. The two most notable IMO are the lack of a DVD drive, and the fact that both the...

Bad Capacitors

If you want to spend the time soldering capacitors to give these machines some new life, its worth it, but not for $239 I got 5 of them for free and started repairing them one by one for about $20 each.

Compact, Small case, almost tool-less assembly

My work has 5 of the GX270 and all of them have leaking capacitors. You will know that its the capacitors or power supply failure when the power button blinks amber ; I took it upon myself to purchase some new caps from and soldered the...

Problematic machine

All hope is not lost though. After researching and experimentation, I figured out that swapping two parts out will solve most of the heat issues. The first change is to replace whatever P4 is in the machine with one of the 6x1 Cedar Mill P4s. Not just...

Small form factor reduces desktop footprint

Terrible flaws in the design leads to unreliability ; The biggest problem is the extreme overheating due to awful cooling. The entire case is cooled with one 60mm fan in the PSU that moves a paltry amount of air. Since the fan is sucking hot air from...

I wouldn't wish these workstations on anyone... they'll just die once the caps are blown.

It's a computer... a very badly put together computer

Steer clear of these workstations. My organization has e-recycled ALL of these (about 20) because of blown caps on the motherboard

Poor quality control by refurbisher

Newegg's vendor that does the refurbishing is showing poor quality control. Newegg- get another vendor that tests the machines thoroughly before shipping.

Good value for a machine running a solid operating system, ie XP

Very poor quality control. First machine came in DOA. Newegg issued RMA without hesitation for replacement. Received replacement and something wrong inside, only some keys of keyboard worked. Tried known good working keyboard w/ same results. Didn't...

Not bad at all.

Overall, this is excellent for the price, and an excellent windows xp "tuner" sort of computer for slowly building up (to an extent) for casual gamers or retro-gamers. The on-board graphics is a major con, but professional computer techn people will...

Mine came with a 700 gb hard drive rather than the advertised 500 gb. It's a Windows XP Professional SP3 machine out of the box. Mine works fine so far. 2GB RAM. It has three extra standard PCI x16 card slots, some sort of mini PCI e slot and one PCI...

The most major con is that it uses onboard (built into the motherboard) 128 mb graphics....these built-in graphics chips can be very complicated to disable (which, so far as I know, must be done before installing a newer graphics card). I really wish...

SOS on this dell with no Pc EXP!!

Over all i' d say that it works ok for a old school DELL. It's for word and some Itunes for my sister and i think it will do the job just fine.

Cheap Set up for the $$- larger 750 GB h/d

The Pc would not boot out of box.. (The USB Key board was full of oil of some sort and was D.O.A out of it's box. The Key board was wrapped in plastic so it had to have come from the factory that way. No ps2 ports on this Mother board! Glad i had...
