Review: Dell PowerEdge T20 Priced Like A NAS

Flexibility and expandability are the main advantages of Dell's low-cost, do-it-yourself server.

For the small office, the decision between buying a file server or NAS often puts simplicity over cost. For the quick sale and setup, the NAS would win every time; it's specialized to be easy to set up and maintain, and can be accessed from outside the...

Dell PowerEdge T20 Mini Tower Server review

A capable entry-level server from Dell

Compact mini-tower with easy access to internals ; Fast quad-core Xeon processor ; Room for six internal disks ; On-board RAID ; Lots of USB ports

Single Gigabit network port ; No embedded hypervisor option ; No hot-swapping of disks ; Needs more than 4GB of RAM ; Basic Intel AMT management

A lot of server for the price of the average desktop, the PowerEdge T20 is fast and has room for lots of storage. The base configuration is a bit lean, but it's still a capable entry-level system and good value for money.

Dell PowerEdge T20 review

More powerful and flexible than a NAS, this server is great value for small businesses that want to keep their options open

Priced at just £444 excluding VAT, the PowerEdge T20 is compares well to the price of many business-oriented four-bay NAS devices. It's also far more versatile, scalable and powerful. You'll need to spend a bit longer configuring it than you would a...

Dell PowerEdge T20 review

Is the PowerEdge T20 the perfect server for small businesses and SOHOs?

Good value; Quiet; Upgradeable storage; Low power usage

Basic server management

The PowerEdge T20 is powerful and has plenty of storage potential making it suitable for SMBs and SOHOs wanting an affordable, purpose built server.

Remote-management features are lacking, but Dell's affordable entry-level server has plenty of potential

good deal

I would buy it again if I could repeat the opportunity.

can't build anything that is geared strictly to server usage this inexpensive. Has all the right bios features for a small server not found on regular desktops

had to mount 500g drives upside down. the quick-mount system was not well-designed.

Great little machine

I have the Pentium 3ghz version procured elsewhere. Using two Western Digital Red 3 TB drives in RAID 1. Idles at 20 watts and goes to 24 watts when writing data to the server.

Quiet, low power, easy drive install, fast enough, Intel server north bridge, ECC memory. Intel on-board RAID. Server 2012 R2 installed fine. Intel on-board NIC

Lacking full size optical bay

Excellent

There really isn't a lot to complain about, if any at all. It's a nice cheap server that, well, works. We are running ubuntu 14.4 and virtualizing a Zentyal 4.1 install at the time of this writing. No complains whatsoever on performance.

Powerful for a good price ; Has virtualization capabilities ; quiet

the PSU is different from what I'm used to. There's no on/off switch, just this button that I think restarts it
